Good/bad advice about vaccinations...?

hi all, i just found out that i have been accepted to a nursing program for the fall of 2007! yay!!! then i read the rest of my acceptance packet...cpr certification, background checks, physicals, and....vaccinations. phew! well, come to find out my mom has put my vaccination records in a safe place, and thus i have no proof that i already have had most of the required vaccinations. the catch is that we have to have all of our records turned in before we can register for classes. now, here's the situation:

i thought that we would need vaccination records finished by the start of classes (august), not the end of march. so, i had planned on getting all the vaccinations and hopefully finding my records by the end of the summer. obviously this is not the case anymore. i got my first hep b shot 3 weeks ago, and am scheduled to get the second shot this friday (even though we can actually sign a waiver for that series!). since i've already started the shot series for hep b, i want to finish it. i called to inquire about the rest of the vaccinations on my list, and if there would be any problem getting them at the same time as the hep b (vs. having to wait a certain length of time between certain vaccinations). they told me that if i needed to get any "live" vaccinations, that they all have to be done at the same time. they also said that if i didn't have proof of the immunization, then i need to get the vaccination. i asked about titers, and aside from the fact that they cost as much as just getting the shot, they told me it could be weeks before i find out the results. this means that it could be after the deadline before i find out the result of the titer, and if it's negative, i'll have to get the vaccination anyway. so, as i understand it, my mom has 3 days to find my records, or i have to get all of the shots on friday. ifi don't, they said i have to wait something like 4 weeks until i can get the other "live" vaccinations. that puts me after the deadline for our records to be turned in.

so, here's my list of questions:

is this right? do i have to get all of them at once?

is it ok to get re-vaccinated for stuff that i was probably vaccinated against as a kid? (i.e. polio, mmr)

should i bother with titers, or because of time constraints just go ahead and get the vaccinations?

in case you are wondering, we need records for the following (so many!):

measles (report of immune titer or vaccination)

tetorifice-diphtheria (completed primary series and booster within 10 years)

mumps

rubella (report of titer or immunization)

polio

completed hep b series (or signed waiver)

ppd skin test or chest x-ray

varicella (titer or vaccine)

oh, and for those of you who are about to suggest contacting my pediatrician and getting the records, i've already tried that angle. he's been retired for years, and i would have to call him at home, find out where the records are, call them, find the records, get copies, and find out what i've already had. ultimately, this would have to be done by friday if i am to get all needed vaccinations at the same time as the hep b shot. i don't even know if i could do this, let alone in the next few weeks!

so, is this normal? do they just throw this stuff on you at the last minute? has anyone else encountered this problem? if so, what did you do? anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated (if this even makes sense). i guess it all kind of hinges on the fact that they say i have to get all the vaccinations at once.

If money is an issue..I'd go to the health department. They are always cheaper than what the dr office will charge.

I think I got my whole series of Hep B shots w/the Health Dept for less than what the md's office wanted for one!

Well, I've priced the titers and shots at three different places, and here's what I've found.

Titers--only one place that I called even does them. They only do titers for varicella ($75), Hep B ($35--which I'm already getting shots for), and I think MMR. Since I'm already getting Hep B shots at my University, I'm just going to get the rest of them there. They are the cheapest anyway ($58).

Vaccination nurse

MMR--$50

Tet/Dip--$30*

Polio--$50

Varicella--$95

*optional: Tet/Dip w/Pertussis--$55 (They suggested this option, but I don't know if it's because they think that it's necessary or if they want more money.)

Total: $225 or $240 w/pertussis

County Health center

MMR--$65

Tet/Dip--$40

Polio--$50

Varicella--$100

Total: $255

University health center

MMR--N/A

Tet/Dip--$30

Polio--N/A

Varicella--N/A

Total: Guess it would be pointless to get shots here, since they only offer one and it's the same price as the other places!

I'm sure the hospitals around here give all of these vaccinations as well, but my guess is that the prices are competative. So, there you go!

We had to get all of the aforementioned vaccinations/titers, too....I'm 51 and didn't even BOTHER trying to find old records...my titers tested out fine -- thank heavens as I had had chicken pox AND mumps as a kid...I just went ahead with all the other vaccines (that tetorifice shot hurt like he!! for almost a week!)....and I don't recall getting started all that early on any of this...allowances were made for some who couldn't get it all in by the start of classes...

I went through my dr's office and insurance covered the majority of it....I had the 1st and 3rd Hep B done on campus however....many folks went the county health department route if they didn't think their insurance would pay for it....

And as for whether or not you can elect to get these vacinations "waived" for school, I don't believe it's the schools' requirements....I thought I understood these to be required by the HOSPITALS.....but I could be wrong...after all, I didn't need these to take my prereqs on the same campus...

Even if you've had the vaccines, you may not be able to show enough of them. In other words, by example, the State of NC requires three MMRs within a certain time period. Because of my age, and therefore different vaccination requirements when I got my BS, I didn't have enough of those shots on my record (and this includes the fact that I was in the military; their standards are different than NC's). I had had a tetorifice booster, as well as a tetorifice when I was in the Air Force, but they required I show three within a certain length of time, so I had to get another one. So you may have to get some shots anyway. Check the requirements carefully against what you have a record of so you don't get a surprise....

I live in a different state than I did growing up and I just called information to ge the number for public health, called them, explained the situation and I had my paperwork to release my records faxed. They then faxed me my immunization records and the whole process from beginning to end was something like 2 or 3 days. I would really concider giving them a shot.

Good luck to you and trust me... there is a reason you got into nursing school. You will learn plently about the profession very quickly! Like I have mentioned in the past, I didn't either. I didn't even know that the NCLEX existed until I was well into my second year of nursing school! I thought all you had to do was graduate! Talk about a shocker.

But... that is all over now and I am an RN. Worth every bit of trouble and leg work.

I got a copy of all my vax's from the school district I went to and I graduated 14 years ago. I still needed boosters, and obviously current PPD.

What's weird is that I've had that damn MMR like 8 times. When I was a child, after each of my three pregancies b/c I never had antibodies with the inital work-up and then again after drawing another titier before I started school. Why can't I build antibodies? I've even had the measles! I'm sure I'll have to get another one if they draw the titer again in the future. :uhoh3:

Some folks NEVER seroconvert. I'm not sure of why.

Funny-- I just found out last night that I need all of the records for my vaccinations. My pediatrician is long gone, the doctors I went to from the time I was in high school until 6 years ago have all gone their separate ways, and noone knows who has my charts. My mom has been looking for my vaccination chart from when I was a kid all day (I keep calling and bugging her), but she can't find them. I had to have a few more vaccinations before I became a teacher, so I'm gonna be really upset if I have to get them all again. I called the doctor that I went to near my house, and they told me they'll do titers. In the mean time, my old doc just called and thinks he located my chart in storage-- he wants me to come to his office to have my physical though, he's 40 minutes away now. Uggghhh. I have until the third week of July to provide my vacc. records. My appointment for my physical/titers is May 9th (I can't go before May because my school won't accept it)--- anyway, long story short-- I so sympathize.

I guess I'm beginning to realize that my situation isn't so unique!!! Good luck everybody, and thanks for all the great advice!
