So basically I'm wondering, while I'm spending four years at Uni, can I start working as an LPN or something part way through for my BSN, or am I literally helpless and stuck at McDonalds type jobs until I graduate?

You could start working as a CNA.Working as an LPN would require comleting an LPN program and writing the exam.
So I'm stuck until I graduate?

It's experience and better pay than McDonald's at least
Outside of my BSN program I don't have to do anything to be a CNA?

Once you finish your first semester, you just take a little test and get your cna. Nothing more. It's easy

Depending on your location, you may or may not have to take the CNA test. I work as a nurse's aide while in college without ever taking the CNA certification. Most hospitals will allow students who've completed a clinical to work as aides.
You can't work as an LPN without having an LPN license.
