Full time work & Full time school??

Hello everyone..

I just had a question for all of you who have done this before...

I had all of my prereqs planned out & was good to go & be finished by next spring.. come to find out  its already been 5 years since I graduated high

school!!:stone How in the world did that happen?? Well, I took Eng 101 & 102

in high school & now have to take them again ... Anyways, I will be working

40 hours a week, have church obligations on Thurs, Fri & Sunday.. and now

I think I will have to tack on Eng 101 to Bio 201 & 205 that I was planning

on taking this Fall.. Now I was thinking this would be impossible, but then

I hear about you that are in nursing school (which Im assuming is way

harder) with kids & a full time job, & I think I have to be able to do it!

Has anyone else survived something like this, or am I better of waiting

longer to get into nursing school?

Thanks for the advice!!! :monkeydance:

You can do it if you set your mind to it and stick with it! I worked full time, am a single mom with two very young kids (6 and 3) and took full time courses until my pre-req's were done. It's been 11yrs since I've been in High School. Man I sure don't feel that old! Anyway, look into taking some distance learning classes. They really help when it comes to scheduling issues, I took almost all of my courses online.

I'm doing the full-time work thing along with full-time nursing school. Oh, and I'm a wife and mother to an 8-yr. old son.

You just do what you have to do. To all the naysayers, I say: It CAN be done!

I think it really depends on your school. Your first year in nursing school you might be able to pull of working full time but I know our final year there is NO way you could work full time, maybe part time. They actually run the numbers of pass/failers and one main theme with the failers was full time work and poor A and P grades. Not trying to be at all, just re-evaluated your work load every quater and seek advise from your school and students in your program who have been there done that

I personally wouldn't be able to work full time and go to through this, but i see people doing it at my school everyday. Sometimes i wonder if these people aren't robots or something because school is so demanding, and then most of them have demanding jobs that don't care that they are in school and have no flexibility, and then throw in kids on top of that, and a lot of people are taking A&P and micro on top of these core nursing because they did not get them out of the way before hand. But i see it done everyday so it must be doable, just depends on your coping skills and management/prioritizing... good luck!!!

I think it depends on what kind of student you are. I have friends w/kids at home that had full-time course loads and full time jobs to get the pre-reqs out of the way. They are very disciplined and have very high grade point averages. It can be done, but they had no life other than work, school, and family.

Keep a really positive attitude and you can do it! When I first started back to school, I had been out of highschool for 20 years (and was working full time). It was hard work, but I just kept telling myself that it would all be worth it in the end. I finished all of my pre-reqs, actually everything other than my nursing classes, and when I start nursing school in August I will be a full-time student and working full time again. Good luck!

i've had to work full time and do the school thing throughout the whole program, and i'm about to graduate (god willing)

the only thing i would mention is that you may find you have conflicts with the schedule for classes/clinicals they give you considering you have church obligations on thurs/fri. some schools are good about this though and you can write a letter explaining your conflict and request certain days (if the class schedule matches it) that's what i've done, and tons of others who have had similar conflicts with work etc

best of luck to you:cheers:

Is it possible to take the English course online? That way, you could study/write assignments late nights and very early mornings. Or, could you test out of some courses?

Some of us don't have an option so believe me, it can be done. Just have to learn to prioritize - something that I suck at:chuckle . But, you can do it.

I spent this 2nd semester of my 1st year working 18 hours one week and 30 the next all semester long and I'm married with a 6 and 10 year old AND it's been since 1992 that I was in school the first time and I did it but it was HARD !!!! I had to stay way focused and I feel like my kids and husband paid a price but it has been worth it. Stick with it, keep your head down and study hard. Be sure to explain to your family that this is a temporary situation that will benefit you all greatly in the end. See if you can do any of your stuff online or distance learning. Good Luck with your future endeavors.
