Just curious if anyone's school is offering flu shots for student nurses?

How about the hospital where you're doing clinicals?

Our school hasn't said a word about it and when someone asked our clinical instructor, she said it was "up to us" if we wanted one. I called the hospital where I do clinicals and it seemed like no one had EVER brought it up to them before.

Am I nuts to think our school should organize something for student nurses?

I'm having a very difficult time finding a place to get one. Either they're out, they're booked or they tell me I can expect to wait hours in line and still may not get one. With my crazy schedule, I don't have hours to spend waiting for anything.

I'm willing to pay for the shot, although, I'll bet some student nurses can't afford it.

Any thoughts?

I could not get one last year.

The hospital I did clinicals at did not offer them for non-employees. Classmates who worked at the hospital were able to get theirs. I went to the health dept, where I was turned down, because the people I cared for were "not sick enough"- HELLO!? They're in a friggin hospital!?:uhoh3:

So, no advice, just a "I've been there" moment. I didn't get the flu though. :) Getting mine today provided there isn't a line out the door.

My nursing school (FSU) holds flu clinics each year, free to all students. For our very first shot, we give a flu vaccine to our lab partner...and then start giving them to the entire student body! It is set up to run throughout late October and November. My group goes tomorrow...and I'll be giving my first shot! How exciting :) From what I've heard, there has been a great turn out so far.

Our school has them in the health services dept. They are for all students of the school and cost $12. I got mine at work for free tho. Last year becuase of the shortage they were more scarce but I *think* nursing and health career students got priority at school. Got mine at school last year.

My school contracts this type of thing out to a small company that does nothing but shots. It's called Shots on the Spot. They're charging $20 a head. They also do HepB immunizations, B12 shots, and a few other things.

Considering 80% of the students at my school are in a health-related program, that company must be making a killing.

A local clinic is offering flu/pneumonia/B12 injections for $20 a pop for students at our campus. I work as a tech, so my facility's employee health department gave out free flu shots a couple weeks ago. If I had $20, I would have definitely gotten a B12...who couldn't use a burst of energy, especially in nursing school. :rotfl: :balloons: :chuckle

We had a flu shot clinic at the hospital where I am doing my clinicals. For the students and staff they were free!!! YEAH I got mine and gave about 20 and also we had the option of the flu mist and I gave about 4 of those out as well. I think all hospitals should offer a flu shot clinic for employees and anyone working (clinicals) there.

My student days are in the past but it really burned me that I would've had to pay for a flu shot at my clinical site. It would've cost like $30! I ended up going to a flu shot clinic sponsored by a local pharmacy chain and paying half that. Worth checking out- I later found out our local Board of Health will give them to residents free after the really high risk residents (seniors, immunocompromised, etc) have been covered.

I actually hope that it isn't required at my future nursing school (if it is I will try and fight it). One of the hospitals in Seattle was forcing employees to get a flu shot and the nursing union sucessfully fought the order... at least until next flu season.

But it should be free to those that are paying money to provide services at the hospital (read: students) that want the shot.

It's not "required" at my school, but I don't want to get the flu.

Everyone in my class got free flu shots through the County because we administered flu shots for their clinic. Maybe your school can get your County Health Dept. involved and offer to have student nurses administer the shots for their clinic in exchange for free flu shots? Also, when we ran the flu shot clinic it counted as a full clinical day for us even though we were each only giving shots for an hour... Just a thought!
