Flashcard suggestions for A&P class

Hi. I am taking a prereq course (Anatomy and Physiology) soon and was hoping to get a jump start on studying and assist my notetaking once the class begins. I figure A&P must be a class where there are already some really good flash cards out there so that I do not waste a lot of time writing flashcards, but spend more time studying/memorizing them. Plus, my artistic skills aren't that great, thus, I figure I will better understand the pre-made flashcards than my own diagrams!

Any suggestions re names of publishing co, names of cards (I assume Anatomay or Anatomy & Physiology) and where you found them (amazon.com, or wherever) would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you have other tips, or think I am way off base on my flashcard theory for this course, please let me know that too!

i got these but never really used them. they're really nice though, if you're into flashcards and think they'll help then i recommend them.

This is just for lecture, because I didn't use flash cards to study for lab (I just used the book and covered the labels with sticky notes in order to memorize the basics):

The cards I made myself were the best I've ever used. Writing them out may seem like you're wasting time, but you're learning while you do it. By the time I got done writing my own cards, I had memorized most of them. Also, for my lecture, we didn't really have to memorize diagrams so drawing wasn't a problem. For actual body parts, that was mainly lab, and I already told you what I did there. :p

I'm a flash card making fool :) I have stacks of them from LPN school that I never threw away. Even now that I'm working I'll review them occasionally. I'll make new ones for the RN program.

I also made flashcards to study from for my science classes. I learned more by making them than I would have by buying them.

I found that the real value of flashcards was not in the review of them, but in the creation.

You don't have to be an artist to make your own very valuable cards. I have a set of Netter's Anatomy Flash cards and they are very nice when sharp illustrations were needed, but my own cards were better for helping me learn how everything goes together.

During nursing school, I tended to make far fewer flashcards because there is so much more material to cover and memorization was not as valuable a tool. However, some of the material did relate well to flashcards and I still made quite a few of them. For instance, I was glad to have cards on the different types of diabetes and cardiovascular meds to review for my final.

They helped me pass lab, and were even helpful for lecture a bit.

I also agree that making flashcards is amazing and helpful. But at least for me, that was only really true for lecture and the OIAs of muscles.

These really helped me with lab. My lab book wasn't very good so these filled in the gaps.

They didn't do anything for lecture though. For that the only thing that worked for me was reading every chapter 2x - once before lecture & once again a day or two before the test. But my professor only tested over 2-3 chapters at a time.

My professor gave Essay type questions only, so flash cards were of little use. I found that teaching someone else what I was learning helped me the most.

Barnes and Nobles sells multiple types of flashcards from Kaplan, Netters, and Barrons. You can find them in the biology section at the store or online. Although, you could probably buy them cheaper through amazon or ebay. Also, many of the textbooks have websites that offer tutorials and online flashcards.

I never found flash cards useful except for learning the muscles and their insertions and origins. I found reading the chapter and taking notes the most beneficial thing for me. However, everyone has their own learning style. :) Good luck!!

Wow! Thanks, everyone! I am convinced! I will make my own like I have in other classes, but maybe buy the flashcards later in class if I just want something else for review later!

Ditto what Intern67 said. The real value is in creating them yourself. One of my A & P professors told us that we should spend a good amount of time drawing the structures we were trying to memorize. One of the problems with premade flashcards (at least for me) is that you end up memorizing that particular picture and can't apply it to the models.
