First week as a ped nurse tech and already sick sick sick!

I started last week as a Pediatric nurse tech.....Yesterday I cared for a 1.5 yr old with diarrhea..Today, I wake up at 5am vomiting and with diarrhea and everytime I stood up, I felt like I was goin to pass out.

I washed hands a lot and gel in and out of each pt room! I've heard when working in a hosp you stay sick a lot the first year bc of your immune system but I have 4 kids, 2 who have gone through daycare, and 3 who are currently in school, so I figured I'd already been exposed to most of the junk out there...Guess not! Now here's to hoping my kids don't get it and have to miss school! I've pretty much slept all day and feeling a bit better, but everytime I get out of bed, I feel OK for a few hours then start feeling like I am going to pass out again. :(

Stay hydrated.

In addition to washing in/out (soap and water not just gel), make sure you don't touch your MM

with your hands while they are "dirty".

I thought i had been...such as I had to do vital signs on all 9-13pts....I gelled in and out and then after done, washed with soap/water. I thought I was being super careful, but must have done something!

I got mycoplasma and RSV pneumonia while in the PICU. I almost ended up intubated (They wanted to...I refused). Spent 7 days in the hospital.

FlyingScot-Holy Crap!! And we are coming up on RSV and Flu season here. I will def get my flu vaccine.

GI bug, should be ok in about 24 to 48 hours. Bad news is it can hit you again and you can give it to the rest of the family. Stay hydrated and get some rest.

I currently don't have any sick days on my record for the past year and I work in a pediatric hospital. Your immune system will eventually catch up and you will be ok, just have to get through the first few months.

soap and warm water, some "bugs" such as cdiff, the gel doesn't touch. good luck
