First time posters - page 5

I'm pretty sure this topic has been brought up before, but why does it seem like so many first time posters get nasty when they don't hear what they want? If they don't hear what they want they... Read More

As nurses, at one time or another, we probably have all been put in our place. Sometimes appropriately, and sometimes not.

As a group, I hope that we can continue to guide newcomers to the profession, or newcomers to the various facets. Nursing encompasses an extremely broad field.

For example, as a long-time PMHNP, I am almost as ignorant about ICU nursing as any random person off the streets.

Everyone has had a first day on the job. 99% of the people have had multiple such first days.

That being said, truly inane questions are annoying, but I hope we continue to welcome questions from sincere newcomers.

I lurked for a long time before joining AN. My first new thread was, and remains, untouched. I figured maybe I was in the wrong neighborhood so I made the exact same post in another neighborhood and had a few people answer with genuine responses. I still lurk for the most part with a few replies here and there. For the most part, it's get what you give type thing with me. If I read through a thread and see it's some back and forth or hateful responses I keep going and don't even bother. Sometimes it's best to avoid the drama altogether.

    Well put, Oldmahubbard!

Sincere questions, like the ones in this post, for example:

And then there was the "Will deers come out of the bushes and attack me as I walk through campus my first semester of nursing school???" threads...
which are hilarious, as long as the OP is a good sport.
Oh deers, that was a fun thread.
Totally off topic so sorry about this. I'd love to see a "Best of AN" section to revisit some of those great threads. You are right saying that when the new poster has a good sense of humor all sorts of fun can be had.

On to topic, I also agree there is a current glut of quite confrontational new posters. Too many threads going from zero to sixty in record time. I've read a few lately that had me going "Huh! That response sure came out of left field." Super over-the-top reactions to rather tame responses. I'll usually read through those threads without responding just to see how long they go before a mod inevitably shuts it down.

I think there should be a well-advertised week where all threads which have been deleted in the past are made available in a special section so we can 'binge' to our heart's content. There are a lot of notable doozies from notable characters, many who became 'former' members. The entertainment value: priceless. I am so tired of always coming upon a thread after all the juicy posts have just been eliminated.

Or how about give them directions to the closest IHOP? Haha, has anyone else seen that commercial?

Can you expand on what you mean by that?

Like in the political area; people already have their minds made up and are just looking to be heard, but never to listen. They think they are right and nothing anyone else can say will sway them ----(even though they come to US asking "advice")---- they are set on slamming anyone who gets in the way of them getting what they want when they come here. Some of them are so immature it amazes me they think they can just walk into an advanced practice role, just like that (funny to me actually)----- and don't want to hear anyone disagree. Then they "would never want me to be their nurse" (one of my FAVORITE LINES). OOOOOH my peewings are so hurt. Not.

I have seen way too many newbie posters show up here, stir up the poop, get mad, have tantrums, and then take their marbles and go home.

I guess that's what I mean. They have their mind made up and they don't give a rat's butt what we have to say UNLESS it supports their world/point of view. So I get annoyed with them even bothering to ask "advice". Their inability to see any other point of view makes what we say pointless unless they are happy with how we say it. PHOOEY.

    Is that more clear?

I need to respectfully disagree, kbrn, I believe you're right on topic.

Likes are a method to indicate a favorite post and can go as far as to be a "Best Of" in a majority rules sort of way. However, and again with all due respect to AN.com and its administrators, the Best Of is chosen by a very few.

Case in Point: In a recent caption contest, an entry of NurseCard's had the most Likes. This would seemingly indicate that the members found NurseCard's entry the most humourous. Surprisingly, NurseCard's entry didn't even make it into the finals to be considered.

Now, the entries which made it into the finals are voted upon and a majority rules wins, but it all seems kind of lopsided.

But hey- who am I to say? This is a successful, popular, productive website and I'm pleased and proud to be a part of it. I just don't understand some actions, that's all.

Edit: Wow. I guess you were off topic, kbrn. I thought I was posting on klone's "Are you discerning with your likes?" thread, took a break, came back, finished posting and saw I was on "First time posters" thread.

    Oh well.
