Financial Aid Question

  1. I am wondering if anyone has ever tried to take a little "extra " out on their student loans? I was thinking about trying to see if I could get an extra $800 just to keep my car payment up to date until the end of the semester. I will only be working part time this semester and was off work for 4 weeks this summer due to having surgery. So, needless to say, I am still trying to play catch up. It's not something I will be doing all the time, but I just need a little help right now. I never realized how expensive first semester for nursing school would be. I'm not even sure if you're allowed to do so such a thing, but if so, how do you go about doing it? I'm going to talk to my FA officer tomorrow, but don't really know how to approach the subject with him. I'm kind of embarassed about it because I have always been so independant, it's just that I'm having a difficult time right now financially. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you need your car for transportation to and from school and clinicals then it is a reasonable expense and you have every right to ask for money to cover or at least assist in all costs (including transportation) associated with your nursing education.

I don't know if what I just typed is a suggestion...or any help at all, but that's just my opinion on the matter...

I don't think you'll have any problem getting the money. Just explain to the FA officer as you have done here about your financial situation with part time employment and nursing school expenses.

    Good luck with everything tomorrow!

I just did it. I need the extra money to help catch up on some bills too. I just went up to the FA office and told them I would like to get an unsubsidized loan in addition to my financial aid. I didn't need to explain anything. I got my letter a few days later. As long as you are already qualifying for financial aid there shouldn't be any problem.

Jen2, I've never tried to take out any extra in Sub or unsub loans, if you need more $ than is offered by those loans your Fin. Aid office may have some ideas for you. Some states have supplemental loans just for nursing students.

Thank you so much. I guess I will find out tomorrow. I hate to take out anymore than I need, but I guess sometimes everyone just needs a little extra help. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
