field of specialty

  1. Since I am only a yr away from getting into the nursing program I noticed that Im asked quite often by people what field do I plan to work in....did any of you know what you were going to do before you even started nursing school? Granted, some may say, I would like to work in pediatrics, etc. How many have actually gone into a field that they actually wanted to go into before they started nursing school?

I am not done with nursing school (actually finished prereqs and waiting to start the Aug 03 term), but I have already changed my interest since I first decided to go to nursing school. I imagine quite a bit do. I used to want to go into L&D, but now I am thinking maybe ER or something to do with oncology. I am not decided yet.

I went into it wanting to do OB but I'm keeping an open mind.

I'll be a nurse in July, but continuing education after that. Interested in Psych/Corrections, maybe teaching down the road.

    Good Luck to you

I'm not in the program yet... still taking the pre-requ's and have to take the NET test in Feb. But I want to work in L & D or pediatrics. I had a baby 15 months ago and he changed my world forever. He is the reason I want to be a nurse. I have an accounting degree and worked for a bank for 6 1/2 years before I had him. I went back to work after 3 months of maternity leave and decided that job was just no longer satisfying to me. I wanted to be home with my son. I knew I would return to work when he started pre-school and thought long and hard what would make me happy...... and being a baby nurse would be just the thing. I love being around all the babies and to be a part of helping one come into the wolrd would be so gratifying. I hope I get accepted into my school's program because I truly believe this is my calling.

    Best wishes to you!

I'm finishing my pre-req's and will start nursing classes in the fall I'm dead set on being a midwife so I would love to start in L&D (I heard it's hard to get into but I will try). I will take a break for about 2 years before I go back for my masters in midwifery.
But there's a slight chance that I may change my mind once I start doing rotations.

    Hey Teresa,
Wadda ya know we no longer have to say Fall of 03... It's just "in fall"...:chuckle
    time is flying

I still have no idea. When we really start doing rotations this semester it will help. Then I can see what interests me.

I am keeping an open mind, but I know one thing: I do NOT want LTC! Our first semester was there, and I just did not feel I would be happy there. Hopefully I will find my niche soon!

I think that is what is great about nursing....there is no one specialty. Although I have toyed with the idea of respiratory therapy, I like the versatility of nursing. The only area that I don't want to go into is med/surg. My fear there is that because of the shortage in this area, if you start here it may be hard to get out...I mean, who could blame the NMs who want to keep the nurses they have despite the fact that these nurses may want to move on.

Right now I'm leaning towards postpartum - mother/baby couplet.

One of the things I like best about Nursing is all of the options it offers. The possibilities are endless!! I start clinicals this Fall- right now I'm leaning toward one of three totally different fields- either L&D, Psychiatric, or Trauma. I am looking SO forward to beginning clinicals so that I can get a feel for all the different areas. I just want to learn as much as I can and then make a decision!!

I work on a tele floor right now as an intern and I really like it. I would like to work tele for a while, get some experience and then eventually work my way to CCU or some sort of intensive care. When I first started school I thought I wanted to work on a "treat em and street em" unit, like the ER. I have come to realize I really enjoy getting to know my patients and getting the same patients for several days so that I can really get to know their lives/meds/disease, etc.

I am set on pulmonary nursing.. more specifically CF patients. I would like to get my NP or Master's in Nursing to gear towards direct care for these patients. Maybe even add in clinical trials for new meds to help CF patients... I guess we will wait and see. I have a long way to go...
