EASY A&P instuctor..will this make nursing school more difficult?

Hi all. I have a concern about my A&P instructor. I found the class very easy...I was expecting a very difficult class. My question is this...if he neglected to go into detail about some things, will I be able to learn what I need to know when I start the nursing program? I am worried I will not have a clue what is going on... Are the nursing classes pretty basic at first? Will I be able to teach myself if need be? Anyone had a similar experience? How much do the pre-req's factor in when taking the nursing classes? I have textbooks to look things up if I do not understand something. Please help! Thanks in advance!:kiss

Yes, you will be able to learn what you need to know to start your nursing program. As you go through your nursing classes you will focus on various diseases. In order to develop nursing care plans you will need to have an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the organ or body system involved. What you will do is take your A&P book out and review this information. Your nursing instructors will most likely review this information as well because that is how nursing is taught. The thing about all these pre-reqs is not so much that you remember every little thing you learned, but that you remember that you did cover material relating to those body parts and that you know where to go to retrieve that information. Your skills as a student are not only that you remember facts, but that you know where to go to get the facts. One of the things you need to accomplish as a student is to learn to go fishing for yourself, not wait for the fish to be handed to you. So, chill. Like thousands of other nursing students who are all in the same boat--you'll get through this.

Thanks alot, Daytonite! You eased my mind. I am constantly reading my textbook, even over the Christmas break! Also, I have noticed that you always have great advice for everyone. I am sure I speak for everyone here when I say that you are a great asset to allnurses! Thanks for your wisdom!:kiss

I doubt it is any different than if you took the classes a few years before starting the program, you forget so much anyway. I wouldn't worry about it at all. A&P classes differ greatly, even within many colleges, in their depth and range of topics.

My A&P teacher was supposed to be the "most easy teacher" but I will tell you honestly, I did very little studying in his class, got an A without a problem and everyone told me what a mistake it was taking his class that I wouldn't be prepared for NS. Well...guess what...I actually learned a ton of stuff and his class more than prepared me for my nursing classes. What he actually did was weed out the stuff that wasn't critical in A&P for us to learn, focused on the big stuff that was important and I'm here to tell you, that is exactly how I needed to learn A&P. My 2nd semester was mainly A&P review of the body systems and I did great on all the tests.

Good luck!!!

Thanks everyone! I was really worried about this! My '"friend" told me A&P is critical for NS and I would be lost unless I knew every little thing about it! Of course, she had to drop out of the program...so maybe she is just trying to scare me! You guys are so great! It is so nice to know that there are people going through the same things I am going through....you rock!!!

Did you ever think of this, he is doing such a good job of teaching that you are enjoying learning and it is coming easy for you? Just something for you to consider.................:wink2:

Good thread. I had an "easy" professor as well for A/P. I had the same concern. whew thanks for the info

I found A&P to be easy as well. However, I have had very little problems in NS, I still get good grades. I agree with a previous poster. Is the class itself easy, or is it just easy for you. I was shocked to later find out how many people had done badly in A&P. This kind of stuff may just come easily to you. You also mentioned that you read your book all the time. That extra reading is probally a large part of why you are doing well. Being willing to read the book will take you far in NS as well!!! Keep up the good work!!!!

By the time I actually got into a program, it had been at least 1.5 yrs since I had A&P. :lol2: I did fine! I always review that stuff anyway b/c I forget things sometimes, but that's normal. You'll be fine! :specs:

I thought my A&P class was too easy also. I did study, but it wasn't for hours on end. We did more "P" than "A" and I had to buy a video just recently on anatomy because I got scared when I realized I didn't know the names of all the muscles in the body!

Really, I don't remember our professor testing us on the 12 cranial nerves and so I have been quizzing myself on them also.

I took A&P in 2003 anyway, so I had to have forgotten some things, but usually when certain subjucts are brought up, I find myself thinking "I remember that!"

I wouldn't worry too much. Like other posters said, a part of being a good student and nurse is not knowing EVERYTHING, but knowing where to look it up.

As a matter of fact, I went to the doctor a while back and the NP had to look up my drugs to prescribe to me. That shows she didn't have all the knowledge in her head, but she knew where to retrieve it and how to use it.

We'll do fine. Good Luck.
