Doubting the whole thing

Well it's the end of my 1st semester in nursing school. Like everyone else I started out trying for the best grade I could and it just went down the toilet. So out of three classes one is a def pass (it was easy no tests easy) the other two not so much. I am riding the line between pass and fail.

You need a min of 74.45 to pass I'm in the 75. Somethings. I showed up every day did well in clincal I just can not pass the tests. The highest one I made was a 72. Yeah and it got worse from there.

I tried changing up my studying (I tried reading the book and note taking, reading the book with highlighting, for one adult health class I used an Nclex book from 2010 none of these things did much for me. I kept making Ds on my tests.

One problem for me is I'd study the stuff talked about in lecture and power points and not ONE question would be on the test. Drives me nuts.

Also people tell me to "skim" the text don't try to read it novel style. But the thing is you miss info doing that.

One thing I had against me was I had to work full time. I nearly maxed out all my paid time off and that was kind of pointless. I admire the classmates that are doing well but I have some deep anger at the idea that some of the "dumber" people I know have passed the Nclex and have a good career I can't even pass semester one. Am I dumb or have something wrong with me?

Taking a class over is not a problem from r me in the sense that we make mistakes and it's my first time in this. But I would t be able to do it until next spring and that's if there is a space for me to fill (I'm back to trying to get into school again I have to compeat with everyone who is new since it entry level.)

i got a final on mon and fri if I make a 70 or better I'll be fine. Problem is in one class I never made higher than a 68 in one class. The other I made a 72 yah me. Has anyone had an issue like this or should I just hang it up?

Thanks

If you were struggling with a particular class, then you should have gotten help BEFORE the semester was almost over. Its a bit too late right now to do anything.

Hey Simplistic, hindsight is 20/20. Way to be rude and unhelpful.

0.5GPA, I highly recommend taking a college success course, changing your study approach, and trying again. I have seen people fail, then try again, and become RNs. I even know people who had failed an entire program, transferred, then passed and became RNs. There is hope, just keep trying! I suggest the Test Success book and Fundamentals Success book for study skills and practice questions.

What is your school's dismissal policy? Most schools are that if you fail two nursing classes, you are dismissed from the program. You said "other two not so much". If you fail both classes, you may not have a chance to come back next semester. If this is the case then make sure you pass two out of three classes.

I am sorry for taking so long to get back to you guy baby land. To my knowledge that is correct. What you said but it doesn't matter I passed everything barely. Thank You God.

On to the next semester

You really need to find out why you are barely passing. If you do poorly on an exam then you need to arrange to meet with your instructor ASAP to go over your exam. You need to know if the issue is with the actual content or if it is the testing style.

Things are not going to get easier content wise, so I'm afraid you'll be in the same position next semester- and nobody wants that.

Good luck!

Edit: I'd like to add that I failed the first quiz in my med surg 1 class by a couple of points. I freaked out and met with advisors- nobody could tell me what I did wrong since I was already doing everything they tell students to do. I found out the issue was my instructors teaching style and I adjusted my habits accordingly. I scored higher and higher on every test and made an A- in the class and a near perfect score on the subject HESI. You can recover from this- it's just going to take a lot of work and figuring out what the issue is.

Like Ace said, you need to get a handle on things at the beginning of the semester this time. Good luck.
