i saw it mentioned on the nursing school survival kit thing. our school has a mentorship program. it started the year i was in first year. (that would be last year) but then we heard the 2nd year students were made to participate. they were given our phone #'s and such, and mine never called me.

this year, it was voluntary. i took on a few students to mentor. its fun. we have email/phone numbers. i called them before the orientation, answer questions (any and all), talk to them in the halls, give encouragement, etc.

its a great program, and fairly easy to implement. i dont talk to my mentees every day, or sometimes even every week, but they know im there if htey need advice

Ours does too and it is voluntary. I was never contacted by mine but my friend who is in the class ahead of mine became my "unofficial mentor". I'm a mentor this semester but I haven't heard much back from my mentoree, I just drop her some notes every once in awhile to see how she is. I got her a survival kit made up too and it was well received. :):)

Our college has done the same thing just within the past year. You are given a chance to sign up if you want a mentor and they try to set you up with one who is in the second year program and they ask the 2nd year students to volunteer to be mentors. I think it's a good thing because I know when I was a first year student I had many questions about surviving nursing school.

I signed up to be a mentor, but mine never called/emailed me back either! I offered to help answer questions, tips on how to study...if I were her I would have jumped at the chance to have a mentor! :chuckle

I had ten students assigned to me for mentoring. Every one of them were called. Some had voicemail, some did not. I left messages with husbands and whoever where I could and called back where there was no way to leave a message. All of the mentors did the same. Nevertheless, there were those who claimed they were never called. We do our best.

We did. We had a covered-dish lunch the first few days of school for the freshmen and we each were assigned a new student and had lunch with them, gave them our phone numbers and was available for mentoring should they need us. My 1st year student never called me or needed me, she was so busy and so was I. :) Peer support is more important than mentoring in my opinion, but still think it's a good idea.
