Doctor teaching nursing class

I attend a small school. Most of my professors for my pre-reqs were doctors or nurse practitioners.

My school has said, many times, a doctor will NOT teach a nursing core class.

I received my schedule and, my current professor (who is a doctor) will be teaching my nursing classes next semester!

Is this even possible? She says she's teaching the class because the lady who was going to be teaching it, quit.

Has anyone ever heard of this ?

Specializes in Med/Surg, Academics.

When I was in school, a practicing MD taught our pharmacology course. It's not unusual, as long as the course is appropriate for a non-nurse to teach, such as health assessment, patho, or pharm.

Specializes in Critical Care, Trauma.

I've never heard of a physician teaching a nursing class... I've had nurses with their doctorate teach a nursing class, but never a physician. I will say that a practicing physician taught my medical terminology and pharmacology classes... He was the best! I learned a lot during his courses.

Specializes in Cardio-Pulmonary; Med-Surg; Private Duty.

My anatomy teacher was a chiropractor.

One of my labs was taught by a research oncologist. She was fantastic..

Specializes in Psychiatry, Community, Nurse Manager, hospice.

Certainly MDs can teach a & p, patho, pharm, micro. You don't want an MD teaching your core nursing classes though.

During my AP1 and AP2 courses both professors were chiropractor's, I made the same conclusion.

Specializes in Med-Tele; ED; ICU.

I wish my nursing classes had been taught by physicians. Generally speaking, I find physician education to be much better than nursing education.
