Dimploma Program Clinical Time

  1. Anyone out there currently in a diploma program? If so, can you tell me how much time you've spent (hands on) in the hospital 1 on 1 with patients?

I think a lot depends on your school.

Regardless, in my diploma program we started with a 4 week CNA course over the summer which included 2 days/week (7a-3p) doing AM care and such for no less than 2 patients. This 1st semester, we really only spend 1 day per week with our patients (by now my entire clinical group each has 2 patients). Next semester (2nd), we'll spend 2 days/week (7:30a-3:30p) with patients.

Hands on in the hospital starts on the 3rd day of class in my program. Which I really like.

Im sure they are all different, but similiar...

That sounds great. I am currently in an associates program getting a B and am not happy with my clinical experience. we've only been with our patients approximatly 4 hours for 8 weeks? Im thinking of switching to a diploma program, I need the hands on experience.

I'm in a diploma program and in our second eight weeks we spent one day a week at the hospital from 7:00 until 12:30. These next eight weeks my schedule shows us at the site from 7:00 until 3:30 two days a week. Later on in the program I know that we do a 12 hour shift one or two days a week.

first semester 0645-1530 once a week,
    second semester the same.

third semester and fourth semester 2x week for the same hours,
fifth is about the same, PLUS preceptorship of 56 hours.

I go to one of the few diploma schools left in Ohio. They partnered up with one of the local colleges, so we also get an Associate's degree along with our diploma. We have clinicals in the hospital twice a week from 7am-1pm. The first two weeks, we learned & practiced some of the skills we would need during clinicals, then we were out on the floor with patients come the third week. So 12 hours a week in the hospital for 13 weeks. I definitly love all the hands on experience we get there.
