it scared me too when i was in school. looking back on it now, there are certain critical conditions that land people in icu like respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, pulmonary embolisms and heart failure. there are also certain procedures that are only done in icus and not out on the regular nursing units. also, as a staff nurse i learned that there was a handful of medications that only the nurses in icu were allowed to give because they had been trained to work with them. here are some helpful weblinks you might want to check out:
