Coolest Micro Lab EVER!

  1. Last week we did throat cultures and planted them on blood agar with a bacitracin disk. About 2 days later I came down with an extremely sore throat, I have never been so excited to go to lab. Today i examined my cultures and they seem to be positive for Type A Strep. Not that I am happy to have Strep throat, but it made for a much more interesting lab. This is so much better than working with stock cultures!

    Too funny!

I have a bad cold now, started with a sore throat. I almost wanted to culture it in lab on Thursday, but we're busy with molds and yeasts, so I skipped it. In fact, I was feeling so lousy that I skipped lecture right after lab! LOL

We had someone in class like that too. She had felt sick but had no insurance, and was just waiting for us to do strep cultures LOL. We did have someone in class who was a strep carrier and didn't know.

We got to do MRSA cultures and found that of a class of about 20, half of us were carrying MRSA on our skin. It was pretty interesting. We re-cultured a week later, and all the same people were still carrying MRSA.

We did a lab where we could test anything on campus, water fountains, toilets, the lake, etc. We made it a competition. I think mine was the grossest by far...I did the bottom of my shoe. The toilets and fountains were actually pretty clean. And then of course we all had to lick an agar to culture the microbes in our mouth. It tasted like salty Jell-O, lol. I loved that class.

How neat! About the lab of course not about your sore throat. I am taking Micro next semester hope to do neat stuff too.

that sounds like so much fun!! i am pouting now though! when i took micro overr the summer we were "not allowed to bring in anything nor will anyone be allowed to culture anything that is not already in our collection" . that was the line given the first lab, and it stuck for the whole time. before taking the class i was always thinking oh this would be cool or that would be cool, then when i took the class i was banned before i even got a chance! i am so bummed!!!

    Oh, that is so neat!

Right now I am growing up some things from my nursing shoes on some agar for a research project. it's been growing for about 24 hours and....ick...probably one of the most disgusting things i've ever seen!

most of it definitely resembles e. coli.....but i could be wrong..

i want to culture everything now!

Sadly, my labs are over. But I still want to culture all kinds of things though. Enjoy it while it lasts hahaha.
