Hey there forum family! I am another pre-nursing student on the boards (just registered for my last pre-req:D) and I thought it would be fun, and interesting to share with everyone what our nursing goals and specialties are? I feel proud to be counted among the many that have decided to become nurses because of a drive and desire to impact and improve lives. :redpinkhe

I have been working in a hospital for a little over a year now in an office setting, but I still get to be very involved with the medical staff and the different units of the hospital. I can honestly say I have a passion for PICU! My career goals as a nurse are to complete nursing school, obtain a BSN, obtain my MSN and certification to be a Neo-natology Nurse Practitioner. I love babies and I think taking care of the really sick ones, and watching them return to health will be incredibly rewarding.

Whether you are getting your RN license, or plan on continuing your education further, I'd love to hear it!

I start my ADN program this fall and will graduate in May 2013. After that, I will take the summer off and start working on my BSN in the fall of 2013 all while working just part time. My long term goal is to work in the NICU. I have always wanted to be a L&D nurse, but the more that I thought about it, critical care is really drawing my attention. However, who knows what will happen once I start my clinical's though. But for now, it's the NICU, PICU, L&D, ICU, ER and OR. These are the places that I would love to start in, but if I could get in the NICU and stay there, I would be happy! In our first semester of NS, we will only be going to a LTC facility for clinical's, but in the second semester, we will do hospitals. Needless to say I cannot wait until Jan.!!

I'd like to do OB/GYN/L&D, reproductive endocrinology or Diabetes Education (I'm diabetic on a pump - who better to teach you about it!)

What a fun thread! I'm about to begin school this fall (ASN). Then the plan is to work a year, preferably in Med/surg or ER, get my feet wet and learn a lot. Next do the RN-MSN bridge program through Frontier to be a CNM. (Catching babies for a living sounds like heaven!) I also have spent many years in the middle east and would love to go back with my degree to work in the slums of Cairo. I'd like to practice as a midwife in a hospital setting or clinic for 10 years or so to gain experience and then the ultimate goal is to run my own birth center. It may take me a while to get there, but the road rip is just as fun as arriving at your destination! :)

I plan on completing my BSN, saving some money, travel for a few years......Im in Ireland so I might to my NCLEX! Get some experience while travelling. Return to Ireland, try to find a job in an speciality that I like, then go on and perhaps get a diploma/specialise in an area or do MSN. :) :)

I'm getting my MA at the moment to boost my overall grades, as I had some tough high school years. I'll work as a tech or per diem as an MA while in nursing school.

Then on to an ADN program. Bridge over to BSN. I'm eyeing University of Minnesota's BSN-to-DNP program.

As for my specialty? I've narrowed it down to psych, ICU (of any kind), ER, or OR. I've always loved all the technology involved in medicine, and I'd love to flex my technical muscles along with good nursing care.

But who knows? Gotta keep an open mind, you know?

Im starting late in "the game". I always wanted to be a CNM, and im starting with an RN 2013 with a huge family 6 kids (4 mine, 2 my partners)~we shall see what becomes of me, in the mean time i will learn all i can, touch and be touched by as many people as i can and reach out to others in need. Im excited for this ride, would love to teach midwivery up in this part of my state, missonary work i feel pulled to also, Red Cross maybe? I should have 30 years in before retirement, god willing.

Good Luck everyone

... I was fortunate enough to be offered a seat in the Gorgas Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine and studied in Peru for 3 months and keep in mind, this is pretty much a prerequisite for MSF...

P.

PaullinaRN, can you tell me more about the application process/your expereince in the program and field? I am interested in making it my speciality area (ultimately working up to MSF). I haven't been able to find much in the way of people's experiences going htrough such programs.

Well I'm already in nursing school but upon graduation I want to get into a nursing residency program for new RN grads and hopefully get assigned in the ICU, PICU, SICU....pretty much any intensive care unit.

Work on that unit for 1-2 years and then apply to CRNA school to get master's or preferably my DNP in anesthetics if they have CRNA programs by that time that offer the DNP as opposed to MSN.

I have also been interested in becoming a neonatal NP

Yep the plan sounds good on paper hopefully it all works out lol.

But good topic to start though. Now we can see what everyone's ambitions are. :)

Specializes in General Surgery.

Emergency nursing for me all the way! I'm beyond ecstatic to be doing my preceptorship in the ED in a couple weeks. I am also excited that I'll be graduating with my ADN this December (FINALLY!).

If it was a perfect world, I would get an position in the ED at the hospital I work at. I'll get several years experience and try to get alphabet soup behind my name as well as advanced training (ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, CCRN, TNCC, etc.) Then, I will apply to either CALSTAR or REACH for a position as a flight nurse! There are a couple of nurses in our ED that work both jobs so I know it's possible!

However in reality, I will be happy with most any nursing position I can get into after nursing school. I will make it into the ED sooner or later, I am determined.

I have also toyed with the idea of trying to become an officer in the Air Force Reserve and become part of a Medevac team.

The sky's the limit! :nurse: Keep your eyes on the prize, ladies and gents :)

I already have a Bachelor's degree so I am a 2nd degree seeking student. I have one prereq class to take in Spring 2013. I will be applying to a BSN program in January 2013 to start in Fall 2013. My goals are to graduate with my BSN, work at a hospital for 1-2 years (preferrably NICU, Ped Oncology, Ped Cardiology), then either get my MSN NP or do a BSN-DNP program . I would really like to be a neonatal NP working in a NICU. Specialty area may change once I get into a BSN program and start clinicals but for now that is what I want to do.
