clepping out of nursing classes

Nursing Students General Students

This is for anybody who can give me their opinion. I am a senior in PN school due to graduate in December!! But aside from that I have a question of LPN-RN students. I am in Arkansas and my teachers tell us that after we are LPNs and we get all our RN prereqs done, we can clep out of most of the nursing courses at our local community college. Have any of you doing your RN done that? If so, did you still have to do the clinical rotation? It would seem that as an LPN with atleast one years experience, let alone many years experience, that clinicals wouldn't be necessary. Except if there was a specific RN skill that needed performed. I don't know; I'm just thinking to myself.

Anyway, I would like to hear from anybody who has a thought on teh subject.

I don't know about CLEPing any courses, but many places have an option for LPN to RN. At my school, LPNs have a bridge class then spend 3 semesters in RN classes. I would think the clinicals would still be very important because you would be doing some different things with care plans and case studies. Of course I am speaking as a non-LPN, just my thoughts!

Yes our schools have that option too, but it is possible to take the clep test for, for instance, nursing care of adults; or nursing care of older adults. Where I live, LPNs do almost everything on the floor as RNs, with a few exceptions. Iv sticks, pushes and so on. The nursing care would be very much the same with the exception of pushing a few drugs PNs can't push. Thanks for your input!

In my area we have the LPN to RN bridge programs and I think that it is 3 semesters long and you have to go all three semesters as far as I know. Microbiology and algebra are required to even get into the bridge program. :)

ntigrad,

at my school, we just had 9 LPN's admitted to the class and they are only taking the last 2 semesters then they will be RN's....they all CLEP out of Peds/OB/geriatrics.

In my state, (PA) if you have taken the LPN courses within the last 12 months you are automatically advanced to second semester. Then you take the challenge exam for Peds/ob, and if you pass you only have 2 semesters left. However, ALL the course work is still required. Micro, anatomy, phys, psych, algebra, chem etc, etc. The nine in my class are really working hard to complete 2 years worth of prereqs in 1 year......my hat is off to them, cuz I would have given up after the first week!

Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK!

Thanks, Gator. It's always interesting to see the differences from state to state. I think you have come the closest to answering the "clep" question. You win the $60 prize! :) But I think it would be hard to do full-time school again just to save time. I have loved PN school very much and done well despite the fact I have a hubby and 3 kids at home. But at this point, as much as I like it, I am ready to be out of school for a while. Heck, I will probably not even become an RN. The difference is not that important to me and I don't care about the money issue. Just don't tell my husband I said that :) He's got my whole career earnings spent in his mind, like I will single-handedly make us rich now that I am marketable! What a goober but I love him. Thanks again!

at the school i attend, the only class an lpn can clep is fundamentals[which includes, basic pharmacology]. it used to be ob too, but i do believe this has ceased.

Oh Jill, do I know how you feel! I too love school but will be jumping with joy when I walk across that stage! I am married with 3 children as well and this is my fourth and final year. I went part time the whole way through so that I would always be here for the kids and be able to go to every soccer game and baseball game etc.. I don't regret doing it this way, and I have all my course work completed for my bachelors degree, but I am not sure when that will ever get finished.

Oh, and about the hubby, I think that yours and mine are brothers! He is always reminding me about what we will be able to afford in the future.....If we bought every single thing that he has casually mentioned over the last 4 years, I will have to work 70 hours a week until retirement. (I'm 31 now!!!)

Yeah...goobers, but the very best kind!

(((hugs to you)))) and good luck with whatever you decide!!
