Chemistry 101 is getting harder.....help!!!!

  1. After we finished with our class last night in Chem. 101...we were flabbergasted....(for lack of a better word)....
We started doing electron configurations.....if you didn't pay attention you would surely be lost.....I have to do some serious studying....and I'm determined because I have to get a C or better in this class to get into the nursing program. 5 women who were nursing majors also...got up and left the class...they said they couldn't do it.....I hope they change their minds and come back....you just have to apply yourself. I also have another problem...my 2dd who is in Kindergarten is having a play tomorrow night....and I have class!!!....I really don't want to miss her first play...but I'll be lost if I don't go to class....I have Chem. tomorrow night....I was thinking of asking my in-laws and my parents and brothers & sister to come...that way she wouldn't feel bad....my DH will be their with our oldest dd and my son. How do you think she'll feel if I wasnt' there.....I'll just feel so bad if I don't go.....

    Fatima--

You were joking about those nursing majors getting up & leaving class, right?? I mean, if they get flustered with chemistry what are they going to do when they have a difficult patient in the hospital--just walk away because they "can't handle it?"
Ok, I'll get down off my soapbox now, but I just had to reply to your post.

Hi I was browsing through the post and I came across yours. I remember chem 101 with a mixture of fondness and dread! Fondness because of the closeness the hours of study groups brought us and dread because if I am to go for my BSN I have to take Organic Chem (lol)!!! I managed to pull off a B+ inthat class at the cost of 10 pounds! Stress, the ultimate weight loss program! Oh well. I hope you did well on your final.
    Good luck.

For some reason I read the date wrong. I lead myself to believe that the post was made last December.

    Christine--

I know, I was thinking the exact same thing when I read this post! If their first instinct was to run away the moment something got a bit difficult, would they have run screaming from a patient's room? LOL! Although I guess it's better for them to get out now rather than later...because they clearly would not be able to handle the rest of nursing school!

    Fatima,
I've had people tell me that Chemistry was the toughest of all courses! It is true that you really do need to go to class, it's hard to miss children's activities I know. Could someone video tape the program and then you could all watch it together later.

Sometimes if my husband can't make it to a sporting event or important school program I will tape (cam cord) it for him. However, he doesn't use a cam corder so in that case I will contact another Mom that normally tapes events and ask her to borrow the tape to see. Most people I know are really good about letting others view the programs! This way the family can watch the program together!

    Good Luck !

My DH was going to videotape it...this morning I found out that their play is going to be postponed. Her teacher is going to be out for the rest of the week. Also, when they do reschedule it, I'm going to ask her teacher if I can come to the dress rehearsal during the day.....that way I won't really miss it. Thanks for the advice. I have to go and study my Chemistry now.

    Hi Fatima,

I read your post and kringed as I remembered taking Chem. Ugggg!!!! Good luck to you.

The only advice I can give you is to really keep up with your coursework. Go to every single lecture, keep up with your book readings, and try to study a little every day because pretty soon it will be exam time and you don't want to be cramming all that stuff. If you think you feel lost now, imagine if you missed a class or two.

    Good Luck

Just thought of someting to add...

IF, and that is if you have trouble with something in chemistry and don't quite understand, see if your school has a math/chem lab where you can go to to ask questions. Many of these labs have students there to help you !! it's a great resource.

Ah Chemistry!!! I remember that class well. I graduated High School in 1980 and never opened a chemistry book until 19 years later. It was the very first class that I took in college. The prof was hard but fair.
One of the things that really helped me out was "The essentials of Chemistry" It is like a cliff notes booklet which has all the major facts.
I have a hands on learning style and Chem was especially difficult becuase I could not hold an atom to study it LOL.
Check out the study guides in your schools bookstore they may help you out.
