Can we start a new forum for "older" student nurses

Nursing Students General Students

it seems there has been tons of interest concerning us "older" students. :chuckle you know, 35 and older who started the whole process late. everytime someone asks if "anyone else is out there? " the thread is flooded. it would be great to have our own forum like the "male nurse forum". if not a forum, how 'bout a sticky??? thanks for considering us older, wiser, (hah) and second career-ers!

I say how about a "Over 50's thread"? I'd sign up. I think 35 y/o is alittle young wihen talking about older nurses. Yes, they can have alot of experience defining them as an experienced nurse but having been 35 and now 50 y/o "old nurse" takes on a whole new meaning to us babies of the 1950's!

Amen.....when I see a poster who's 32 complaining about being old I want to cry!! I would trade in a heartbeat to be that age -- but only if I could know what I know now....us babies of the 50's have a lot to offer...let's hang in there all you old farts.....:chuckle!!!

I agree with one of the previous posters about not fitting in with the "younger" crowd at 30. I much more enjoy talking with the "older" ladies. Then, I see some gals age 30+ hanging with the way young girls, and they look silly IMO.... I think at 30 or over, a person would want to stray away from all that clique crap....I do enjoy alot of the people younger than me. They're so full of energy and carefree...... But of course there's always one or two people who never shut up during lecture, or slouch in their chairs, etc... Ok, just rambling. I usually just lurk, but thought I'd throw in my two cents!!

Oh, btw, the instructor asked everyone the other day how old everyone thought was "old" (we're studying geriatrics) and i heard one of the girls belt out "30!". I'm still mad about that. What the heck? I feel great right now. This has to be the best age in the world. I'm 30 years old, have two young boys, a loving husband, am in nursing school, this is the best part of my life!! I'm very glad I'm not 19 years old anymore wondering what in the heck to do with myself!! LOL-Ok, enough venting

Yeah, but I remember when I thought 30 sounded old.

I'm enjoying this time too. :)

When I was 12 y/o we went to my Uncle's 50th birthday party and they had a portrait painted of him and it was hanging on the wall. His hair was grey. I remember looking at that picture and saying to myself, Wow he is really really old, I'll never be that old. I'm now 50 and though there are days my bones ache, I'm not old ! I've still got alot of spunk in me!

That's a good story, Dutch. Isn't it funny what we remember as kids? I remember the exact moment (I think I was 5 years old) looking at myself intently in the mirror, studying my face, wondering what I would look like as a woman. LOL. I told myself at that moment I would never forget the way I looked right then and there. Weird. And when I go back to my Dad's house and look in that mirror, the room seems so small....How things change. These geri/aging classes really have me thinking. And the teachers don't help either, bringing in all these sappy poems. I tear up at least once in each lecture. LOL

Jenny, that's just too precious. How neat your Dad still lives in the same house and has that same mirror. I've had times too that as I child I thought I'll never forget this and I never have. I remember being elementary school age and my Mom sitting down with me to teach me how to knit. It was so special just her and I. I still remember that when I think about knitting, forgot how to knit but love the memory. I grew up in Florida. In Elementary school we had this huge slide on play ground. Several years ago I had a chance to go by the school and the slide was so small! Yes, our perspectives as children are so different and so wonderful. It's been fun going down memory lane!

I"m going to resurrect this old thread because I can't believe I missed it when it first came out in January! LOL But also becuase I want to know if Dublin37 got into nursing school. I start this fall and I'm in my 40's Love the older nursing student forum idea. Guess it never went anywhere :o

I saw a statistical chart somewhere about the ages of nurses, and if you think about it, the majority of nurses are in their 40's or so. So, the majority would post in that forum. haha

So, I guess maybe it's not needed???????? Maybe the 25 and younger need their own forum. :lol2:

Hi Faerie! Yes i will be starting in the Fall 06! wahooooo, :nurse: :yeah: though now that it's a reality, i'm scared!! :smackingf I just turned 44 in January. My initial thinking when i began my pre-req's was that i'd be done about now! :lol2: but really it doesn't matter. There have been many difficult paths i've had to walk while waiting, and whether i'm 42 or 44 or 60, if i'm still here i might as well use my time to help others! see ya, dublin
