CA acc. BSN/ E-MSN and online courses questions

Hi everyone!!

These discussions are great! I have found so much info so far...!

I have a few questions for those of you out there in regards to CA programs. I have a B.S. in biology from '97, and was wondering what options there are for nursing schools. So far I am more inclined towards the accelerated BSN and the direct entry MSN's (especially these MSN programs, it would be the most ideal choice)... I'm over in the LA area...

this is what I've found so far:

accelerated BSN: CSULB and Loma Linda (too far for me)

(MtStMary's has a strict 3.0 bachelor requirement, and won't consider my post B.S. grades for admissions)

direct E-MSN: Pomona and San Diego, and I know there are some in SF, but that's too far as well...

Anyone in any of these programs that can give some suggestions or know of any other universities? I have a low bachelor GPA and a very high post bachelor GPA, so it has been limiting for me.

Also, in regards to all of the above schools mentioned, do you know if these schools (or community colleges associate programs, also) would take online courses to fulfill the major science with lab requirements? I am a single mom with 2 kids, and the idea of being able to do it online was intriguing. Every local college is impacted and I was unable to sign up for these courses. What I have found is these online courses with lab for A+P and micro, from universities such as Rio Maricopa in AZ, CCConline in Colorado, and BYU. Does anyone know if the CA schools (community, state and privates) take these?

Thank you to everyone for your help!!

you have to ask the individual programs. I gave them the links to the course descriptions so they couold see what the courses covered. ALso try www.iowacconline.com fro A & P and Chem. The courses end up running about $400 for a 4 hour course.

thank you for the info, I'll check that one out too... I hope they take these over here...

Hey...I looked into a lot of these programs before deciding to go out of state. I mainly looked at the Accelerated programs (ie. Mt. St. Mary's and LB State). At LB State, they are newer and you need Biochem and Ochem...I think they did away with the Pharmacology pre-req. I have a friend going through it and he seems happy. I know they are going back to only entering classes once a year and they are impacted big time on the regular program and the accelerated program. Mt. St. Mary's I didn't like b/c I would have had to take 2 philosophy classes and 2 religion classes. But they do offer a regular 1 year program and a 2 year program where you go part-time (classes 1 day a week and clinicals on weekend) for BSN programs. They are expensive (36K) but remember, your GPA will be figured based on your previous coursework and any of your newer Pre-req course work. This helped up my GPA a little bit so refigure it with that.

As for the community college program. the classes will say they are closed, but every single one of my prereqs I ended up getting into...I just had to make sure I went to the classes the first nights and stuck it out until the instructors let me in. I'm not sure if they will take distance classes..each program has to answer that. I do know that I took my lifespan develop. class through Excelsior College and everyone was going to accept that. But I don't know about them accepting science courses. Hope this helps...Best of Luck!

Thank you for all the info... I did look into everything from ADN, to BSN, to the accel. BSN and entry Masters. Somehow the idea of following up on the bachelor's I already have sounded appealing so I was leaving the ADN/BSN options in case I can't get into any accel. BSN or E-MSN's.

I know the local community colleges start next week, and I plan on being very stubborn and attending every single lecture in hopes that I will be added to any of them. Hopefully someone's gotta give or drop, heehee...

I just figured I'd have a back-up plan in case I couldn't add them since I HAVE to take A+P II and micro by December. Plus I have seen that some universities require chemistry and want it done withint the last 5 or 7 years... I think mine was 10 so I'm not sure if I have to retake it or not.

Anyone take the CLEP exams to fulfill this kind of requirement for a similar situation?

Hello Myethpio,

I am kinda in the same boat. I have been researching alot of the same programs. I am relocating to California after completing my 1st bachelors degree in May of 2005. I am wanting to apply to the Accelerated BSN, but from what I have read, its more competitive than the traditional programs. I don't want to get discouraged, If you have any advice or info, about these programs, that you have discovered, your help would be appreciated. :)

anything new out there?

CSULB wanted me to take all of my prereqs from over 5 yrs ago from my bachelor's over, so that's not an option for me...

and MSM makes first cuts based on undergrad GPA's, so that was my faulty point way back when ... :(

just thought I'd see what others are doing out there!

Hi there from SF bay area!! I know you said its too far for you but just wanted to let you know that most of the schools in my area have some sort of "recency requirement" for science prereqs. most of the time anatomy, physiology and micro have to be taken with in 5 years, no exceptions so its not uncommon to find that.

Kharpe, have you taken a look at all of the entry MSN's, or the accelerated BSN's over here in Ca/
