Bad bad week and 1st test tomorrow

I have my first fundamentals test tomorrow morning and have never felt so unprepared for a test in my life.

We buried my son's best friend this week as well as one of my fellow nursing students. I've spent the week grieving with my son and now I'm having an Irritable Bowel flare-up.

I'm on a bland diet of white bread, white rice, white noodles (you get the idea) and am so tired. I don't see how I can have the mental focus and energy to take this test without some protein or a big cup of Coke (not good for the bowel, apparently.)

If anybody feels like praying or thinking happy positive thoughts for me I'd really appreciate it.

I am a 4.0 student but will fall to my knees in thanksgiving if I get a 74% tomorrow.

Yes a 74 would be a blessing under those circumstances. My condolences and I hope the IBS flareup clears up soon.

How's your son doing? This is so sad! I don't wonder that you are having a hard time concentrating, and also, living on white foods doesn't exactly empower you. Can you have bananas? I think they are useful for adding bulk (can be constipating if eaten too often!). But probably with time this will get better, you are under a lot of stress as you have said!

I wonder if you can go in there with the attitude that you will take the test, just do your best - study some, but get your rest and do some relaxation/prayer. Nice music, hugging your son, even a big cry ... If you don't do well can you ask for a re-take explaining the situation, or, what is the consequence of being out sick tomorrow?

Definitely feel for you. Sorry too about your fellow student too, wish I could help!

take a deep breath and do your best. If you bomb this test, you can make up for it later.. you circumstances really didnt warrant any study time, life- and death got in the way. Try to calmly focus yourself and not be too upset and nervous, this will only block anything you have studied, say to yourself- i can do this, it will be ok.

good luck!

My son is doing as well as expected. He has a history of depression, so I am concerned that he will withdraw and isolate himself from his suriving friends.

I just got back from a study group and it was reassuring to know that everyone else came up with the same answers, ideas etc, for the blueprint.

Thank you so much for the kind and supportive words. I do feel encouraged and know that tomorrow's results are not the end. If I fail this test, I can remediate and will still be in the program.

with all of that happening, is there any possibility of talking to the teacher about an extension? You should let them know what is happening. Even if nothing can be done, it will let them know that there was a reason for a low score if you receive one.

I was thinking the same thing. They are quite extenuating circumstances.

My condolences to you and your son for your losses.

My condolences too. Remember , this is your first test.We have 10 or 12 units with a minor and major grade averaged together and a 30% final. You could bomb this and still make it up. Remember that your fellow nursing student, if he/she is anything like the students that I am with, loves you and wants you to do your best, and would tell you that if they could. Go in there and do your best in his/her honor!

I don't know what you can or can't have in your diet, but our group passes a few chunks of dark chocolate around(brain food?) and say a prayer before ours. Chew gum an hour before the test ; some say that ups the circulation to the brain. Immodium shuts the bowels up for a few hours.

God Bless you and guide you!

Well, I took the test. I decided that I wouldn't ask for special favors (like taking it later) because in the real world I will still have to give competent care even when I am tired, sick to my stomach, etc., and I did just fine. I went in there only hoping to pass, and I got a 94%!!! And judging from the comments made by those sitting around me, it looks like points will be added as well.

I can't even describe how relieved I am.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful advice and kind words. It means so much to know that someone else cares and is offering their support.
