My mother-in-law was a diabetic (diet management & meds) and she started the Atkins diet--lost nearly 100 lbs. and is now med free.

You do have to be careful with the diet, however, because it can be quite dangerous. If taken to an extreme, it can cause calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium levels to become extremely low, and you can become ketonic. Ketosis can occur when all of the available glycogen (sugar) has been consumed, and the body then begins burning essential fats, minerals, and vitamins. This leads to excessive urination, which further complicates the problem due to loss of additional electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium). This loss of electrolytes can lead to arrhythmia, and even death.

Of course, the moral of the story is--as with all things, moderation is the key. The people I've heard of who have gotten in trouble are the ones who have completely eliminated carbs from their diet and are only eating protein. That's too much. A reducation in carbs along with an otherwise well-balanced diet should keep you out of danger. Of course, since your doctor is guiding you I'm sure you're okay.

I'm trying weight watchers right now, but I lack the motivation. You will lose alot of weight. Sugarfree jello mixed with sugarfree whipped cream is a lifesaver when the family is eating ice cream.
    NYStudent,

Have you tried Dryer's low fat, no sugar added (sweetened with Splenda) ice cream? It tastes and feels like ice cream should! Also, it's 1 point for 1/2 a cup and if you add 2 graham crackers to it, you get desert for 3 points!

    OP,

Good luck with the Atkins thing, I personally haven't tried it so I can't say one way or another if it's good or bad.

too confusing counting and anticipating all those points

Think I will just go out and Buy a Foot Long Chili cheese Coney
with 2 burritos on the side and some onion rings

I don't find it confusing, I find it rather easy...maybe that's why I've lost 15 pounds and been able to keep it off.

We don't have any sugar-free or low carb products over here and I do just fine. I do have Splenda and sugar-free jello and puddings over, but just by cutting out sugar, white bread, white rice, and white pasta things work.
I do have brown rice every day at lunch with lots of vegetables, and some type of meat or fish or seafood.

Any time that you limit yourself strictly and try to follow a diet to the letter, you are going to get bored and not stick with it. Look at how many of the psoters above have stated that they were on such and such diet, loved it for awhile, but then went off of it because of boredom. Find what foods work for your body and stick to that. Things are different for each individual.

Some people just cut out sugar, others have to be more strict, I still have a Sunday brunch each weekend where I don't restrict myself as much, but still watch what I consume. This works for me..............

Good luck to all of you.....................

How about a large deep dish pizza with extra cheese, pepperoni, bacon and jalapenos sound
with a side order of hot buffaloe wings yum

I have to ask what your lab values are like if you are really consuming that!

I tried atkins several years ago just as an experiment. I was just going to try it for two weeks and see what happened. I stayed on it for a good 6 months (lost 60lbs) then started "playing" with it too much. I still kept my weight off for over 2 years then I started nursing school, and have gained back about 1/2 of what I had lost. Even better than the weight loss was how good I felt when I was on it. I had more energy, less headaches and slept better. So starting yesterday I'm back on it, lets see if I can be true to myself again.

Here are a couple good sites for support and recipes:

    and the matching recipe site

Good luck to all you "losers"

I skimmed through the Atkins book yesterday at Wal-mart. After looking at some of the recipes I just don't know if I can eat like that. I am not a big "meat" person to start with. I eat meat, but always while eating it I think about what I am eating and sometmes get sick. So my meat portions are usually small but I do eat a lot of pastas....So if I substituted all the pasta for fresh fruit and veggies do you think that would help?? Or do you have to really have no carbs at all for that induction period?

Good idea, you do mean without the crust and no sugar in the wing sauce, right?

    Hi there,

How about substituting tofu instead of the meat. You really need your protein.

you need 20 grams of carbs on induction mainly from 3 cups of vegetables per day. i break it down into a 2 cup salad (chicken and cheese) at lunch and 1 cup of other veggies at dinner with some sort of meat. a good website is www.atkins.com
they have lots of online info if you don't want to buy the book.
