Areas of nursing

Just curious,

Based on your clinical and/or personal experiences, what are 3 areas of nursing that you're most interested in? Which 3 areas are ones that you know you would NEVER work in?

For me, the *Top 3* areas I would like to work in are:

1) Geriatrics/LTC. I have worked at an ALF with dementia and Alzheimer's patients for over 3.5 years now, and it's my passion.

2) Psych.. I have always been interested in working in a psych facility. If I didn't go to school for nursing, I would definitely be going for a degree in Psychology. I find everything about it fascinating, and the only kind of meds I was interested in reading about in pharmacology were psych meds.

3) Forensic nursing.. I also find this area of nursing very interesting, although I think it would be very hard to get into.

The areas I would most likely *not* work in are:

1) Med/Surg

2) Cardiac/Telemetry

3) ICU

...actually, just hospital nursing in general.

What about you? :)

Specializes in Peds; Cardiac, NICU, PACU.

My top 3:

1) ER

2) OR

3) L&D

I also have to give an honorable mention to ICU

My bottom 3

1)LTC

2) hospice

3) psych

Specializes in Emergency/Cath Lab.

1. Flight

2. ICU

3. ER

Hate

1. Peds

2. L and D

3. Rehab

Specializes in cardiac, emergency.
Ahem...

1. ER (I'm like you theantichick, I could just eat sleep and breath trauma! But I'm a former 911 operator, I like the sudden panic, the calming people down, and my best friend is an EMT, so I'd love to get to see more of her, and see the other side of her stories!)

2. Pediatrics, I know wayyy different than ER, but I love kids. I'm gonna have a dozen of em if I can ever afford them!

3. ICU, critical care is by far to me the most interesting.

Least:

1. Oncology, cancer to me strikes a nerve and very close to home. There's a difference between caring and caring too much, I couldn't undertake that heartbreak again, I would inevitably care too much.

2. Geriatrics, I love my elders, but much like oncology it would be a reminder of how helpless one can be in certain situations. My stint in my CNA course taught me I love people, I could most likely make a brilliant RN, but long term care is not for me.

3. Labor and Delivery, yes I love children, and the miracle of birth is beautiful. Yet, there are certain parts of the anatomy that will just never be my favorite, give me blood guts and gore, but nothing turns my stomach like after birth!

totally agree with the least favorite areas:cool:

Favorite:

1. Pediatrics, although i get little nervous around children

2. Orthopaedics

3. ER

Specializes in Public health nursing.

Top 3:

1. Telemetry

2. Public health

3. NICU

Bottom of the barrel 3:

1. Oncology

2. Psych

3. ER

Anywhere there is a shortage, and a RN is needed! This way I will be able to utilize all the skills I will have learned in school and acquired through job experience, someplace where I can make a difference.... (I know this sounds cliche....being a new comer to the world of nursing I think most of us have not yet reached the point of burn-out YET! :w00t: (I must also note, at my age when I'm finally finished with my degree's I will be fortunate be be offered any job)! :anpom:My goal; in 15 years-a completed masters in Nursing, 10 years of nursing care experience; and for the last working years of my life, a nursing instructor for a college or university! Life is Good....GOD is GREAT:thankya:

I'm most interested in:

1. L&D

2. ER

3. Med/surge

4. NICU

Least interested in:

1. LTC

2. Psych

3. OR

I'd like to do:

1. Long Term Care- I love the elderly.

2. Public Health- i would like helping maybe people less fortunate.

3. Psych- I just would find it interesting, if I continue to my Rn I'd want to become a Psych NP.

I wouldn't want to work in:

1. Pediatrics- I wouldn't want to deal with the kids parents or see kids hurting.

2. L/D- I love babies but it would be hard to deal with seeing a sick baby or a dying one.

3.ER- I think it would be too hectic for me.

Specializes in Perinatal.

Top 5 since I have more than three to keep my options open~lol:

1. L&D

2. Postpartum

3. Peds

4. ED

5. PACU

Least:

1. Med-Surg/Tele

2. Psych

3. OR/ICU/CCU/LTC...pretty much everything other than my top 5 ;)

Specializes in CNA.

Most Interested:

1. LTC

2. Psych

3. Med Surg with ICU a close 4th

Least interested:

1. OR

2. ER

3. L&D

Pediatrics would be hard for me, Id hate to see the sick little ones go downhill, but it would be 5th on my interested in list.

Specializes in L&D/Maternity nursing.

I am an OB/L&D girl at heart. I want to get into advanced practice at some point..either a Women's Health NP or CNM.

But here I am working in Med/Surg and acute rehab. I must admit I was really bummed about not being able to land a L&D position, but after some real soul searching, I realized that this is really good for me for the time being. Med/Surg will provide me with a good background knowledge in virtually everything and it will be extremely valuable for me to hone in on my skills. This will be especially good if I go down the NP tract since I will have patients across the entire life span adolescent through older adult.

So long winded answer later, I guess my point is that it is okay to be passionate about certain specialties. Its good to know what you want to do. However, don't be too quick to turn a blind eye to other specialties as there is much to be appreciated there too.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

We sound alike. :) I also love kids but I don't think I could deal with seeing them hurt or sick on a regular basis. I also would find ER to be too hectic, I like a little bit more of a routine.. although psych is anything but routine :p

I start clinicals next fall and don't have ANY hospital experience, so it'll be interesting to see what I love at the END of nursing school, haha.....but for right now I am thinking....

Best:

1. ER - I love being busy all day, running around, working at a fast pace, and I work well under pressure.

2. Peds - MAYBE, haha. I love kids, but like everyone else said, I don't know if i'd be able to handle the sadness.

3. I don't have a 3rd yet, I guess I'll have get my clinical experiences to have a better idea.

Worst:

1. nursing home/hospice - not my thing.

2. outpatient office - I'm pretty sure I want to work in a hospital

3. psych - I want to be on my feet, busy busy busy....I'm not sure I would thrive in that kind of environment.

It'll be funny to compare these answers after I finish clinicals! haha.
