Anyone trying to get fit before NS?

I start in August... I'd really like to lose about 20 pounds this summer and get a bit more cardiovascular-ly fit before school starts! Anyone else in my boat and want an accountability partner? :)

I have been in school about 6 months, and at the beginning the instructors told us very matter-of-factly that we were all going to gain weight. And to virtually guarantee it, they constantly supply us with cake, ice cream, giant bags of candy from Costco, bagels the size of frisbees (and the required cream cheese), catered pasta trays, sandwich platters, and pizza. They use our student activity fees to pay for these treats, and I appreciate that they're trying to reward us. But many of the instructors and other students are obese, and I find that puzzling since we're all going into health care. Obesity is where a lot of chronic disease begins. Why can't we take care of ourselves?

So yeah, I would get a head start on your fitness, and keep in mind you'll be stressed out and surrounded by tempting food once you get into school. I stuff Larabars in my scrubs to survive long clinicals. (steps down from soapbox....)

Haha, this is so true. My professor this semester threw us a pizza party of all things! It was our reward for doing well on our Nutrition projects. >_

Yes! I need to get back in shape. I was exercising 5 to 6 days per week last year for my wedding. I was in GREAT shape. Then I took 17 credits in one semester and that blew exercising out of the water. I was swamped with homework & studying. I need to get back on track and in shape for nursing school. Luckily, I haven't gained any weight, but I feel flabbier than I was last year.

I'd love to lose about 5 to 10 pounds, if I can. At this point, I'd settle for not getting winded when I take the stairs...LOL :D

Let's do this!!!!

I start in August as well and need to lose a good 20 lbs then I will be happy. It is SO hard though. I love food so much and hate exercise. I already work in the ICU so I'm on my feet for 3 12's in a row anyhow and when I get home in the morning the last thing I want to do is go to the gym. Not to mention I hate running. Wish it would just melt off.

I have Hashimoto's as well! Never had an issue with my weight until I started taking my synthyroid. Since I felt better, I was able to finally eat again. Now I've gone from around 125 to 150 and that extra 25 MUST go. It's a pain to exercise when your exhausted all the time.

Have you tried levothyroxine? I always felt fatigued and my hair was falling out on synthroid. I feel so much better on levothyroxine!

I had 2 babies in the past 2 year so I need to get back into shape. I don't really need to lose weight but I need to get fit again. I think I will be gasping for air during the clinics!

Me! Me! Me! I had a baby almost 2 years ago. I gained about 60#. Lost 25# right after I had her. Then within the last year, I gained about 35# (stress, hospitalizations, school, life in general). I'm starting my BSN program in August and I would LOVE to be even 20# lighter to fit in with the other young skinny people lol. Our cohort has made a facebook page and all of us would like to do pre-class workouts in the mornings, which I think would be nice. I miss being strong and fit like when I was a swimmer/water polo player lol

I didn't read every post, but are there any CrossFitters here?? I am trying to get more regular with my WODs and improve some of my heavy PRs like my back squat and deadlift, I think the strength will really help in NS... I'm only 5'1 but pretty strong for my size!! :sneaky: I'm starting a 5x5 squat program to help with that.

Being on the NuvaRing for the last year has helped with the pms/cravings that are largely responsible for my occasional Paleo lapses, but I still have issues with snacking in a highly-processed world... good luck to everyone with your personal goals!!

After reading this thread https://allnurses.com/nursing-job-search/failed-lift-test-571015-page8.html#post7334758 I decided I had better start lifting weights. I can't even lift 50 pounds right now, I have trouble with 25, so I have a long way to go.

Same here, the past two weeks I've been steadily building my stamina with cardio and next week I'm going to start a weight training regimen. My goal is to be able to squat, bench, and deadlift at least 100lbs by September when NS starts. Good luck to everyone - just keep at it and I KNOW that you'll accomplish your goals! At least I know that I WILL!!

I would totally be interested in being an accountability partner! I am getting married next summer and am trying to lose weight also. I am new to the forum and am not able to PM, but I sent you a friend request.
