    these are drilled into us!
    in a nutshell:
    empirical is the scientific knowledge.
personal is what you know from lived experiences.
    aesthetical is related to creativity.
ethical is dealing w/ issues that there is no black/white answer. need to consider society, norms, moral issues, legal, etc.

carper's theory is that you bring all of these into the nursing process in caring for the pt.

hope this helps. as i said - a nutshell.

thank you so much for your input! since i posted i found two good articles online through my school's website, but they are much much more owrd than your simple explanation, well at least one of them is, but your explanation really helped to me to grasp the core concept of it all so it will be helpful to me as i read these two articles and pick points out for my assignment.
my tutorial instructor hadn't even heard of carper's!!! and this is for her class!

lol my school is big on the 4 ways of knowing and 5 cs of caring : p i got so sick of these things because we had to write them all out specifically tailored to each of our patients with all of our care plans. ugh. one thing i definately will not miss about nursing school!

The revised courses incorporate various adult learning principles, including Carper's (4) patterns of 4 ways of "knowing": empirical, ethical, personal, and aesthetic. Empirical knowing consists of empirical data or factual knowledge. Ethical knowing assumes that nurses react to moral situations with an ethical framework that guides patient care. Personal knowing incorporates the lived experience that each nurse brings to the situation. Finally, aesthetic knowing employs both intuition and understanding to appreciate the individuality of each patient. Thus, by acknowledging that not all knowing is empirical, both courses allow for discussions regarding simulated and actual patient, family, nurse, and system scenarios that recognize the importance of ethical, personal, and aesthetic knowledge.

i know its incorprated into john model of structured reflection
anyone else have to use this model, as using it makes you learn by reflection of the different ways you think
