Any ideas on how to stay awake???

Between working, attending classes, traveling to and from everything, trying to clean the house, doing laundry, and all that studying...I'm exhausted!

I really want to study (and I really have to study!) but by the time I sit down ready to hit the books I start to yawn and get really drowsy. All I want to do is take a nap. Other than the obvious answer of downing 800 cups of coffee (which I don't really want to do), can anyone give me ideas on how to stay awake! :zzzzz :zzzzz

Try not to skimp on your sleep, it's very important for your overall health. Once you get run down and catch every bug that comes along (especially being exposed to hospitals for clinicals!), you're going to exhausted and worn out and then not able to do much at all. I've seen it a lot in my school - the young moms and wives who think they still have to have a perfect house with a perfectly balanced meal on the table every night, everything just so, and then staying up all hours studying and doing papers. You eventually get burned out and/or sick and something has to give. I bought myself a crock pot cookbook which I eyeballed at the checkout in the grocery store while waiting in line the other day - I intend to fire mine up soon once classes and clinicals get underway. Having a nice hot meal waiting for you is a great help after a long day. I like the idea someone posted about paper plates and disposable chinet bowls, too. Helps w/ the dishes a lot. I am definitely a morning study person - especially weekends when the kids are still sleeping late. That's MY TIME - find a quiet room and read over your notes, read ahead a little. If I wait until nighttime, I'm too beat. But again, first and foremost, take care of your health. Don't slam the coffee or pop the Vivarins. Your body will scream back soon.

Like Berta, I too need lots of sleep. I try to get up early to get the house going... and yes, with a busy family, much does need to be done by me. We dole out jobs, but I still have mine. My kids are both on the bus by 7am. I leave for school soon after. I get to school early and have a few minutes for a cup of coffee and a look through my assignements in the caf before class. (going that early also gets me a good parking spot!) If I have breaks between classes, I hit the books. I use the library or an outdoor table. I may go to starbucks.

When I am home, I am a mom... it's hard to focus on the books. I do as much as I can away from home.

Things will change for me on Tues when I start my actual nursing classes. DH will get kids off because I have early classes. I am already planning on where I will study at my new campus. Today I found a back door to the nursing area with tables that face a "jungle"... it looked like the perfect study spot to me... hope no one else finds it for awhile!

I loved kimtabs suggestion for putting surgical patients to sleep...should work...it works every time for me. :zzzzz
