Another great day at clinicals

Well both my patient and myself survived the first code I have ever seen. I don't know what I was expecting but I must admitt it went better than I thought. These nurses are so awesome. About 10 people ran into the room and I just melted into the background and got to watch everything. For some reason I had it in my head that I would be alone during a code. ( I know dumb) Everyone had a job to do and it was like a well oiled machine. Someone would no sooner say I need... and it was in thier hand. It just amazes me that a patient can code and then be fine the rest of the day. I am just enjoying my learning expierence this year. The best part was my sweet old lady made it through and her pacemaker did what it was suppose to do. I think I need a nap now.

We had a code about a month ago on our floor and it was exciting to see how everyone just jumped up and did what needed to be done. We helped a little by clearing the room and hall. One of the students actually got to call the code over the PA system because everyone on the floor was in the room working on the patient. Unfortunately the patient died two weeks ago in ICU. Her heart stopped and they brought her back again but this time she was brain dead and the family decided the take her off the vent.

Congrats. Codes can be a very stressful time for a lot of staff members.

And when they do CPR on the patient, it's amazing how much they actually compress the chest.

Great day in clinical for you! I haven't experienced a code yet, but I do enjoy my clinical days. We use a preceptor model at our school (we get assigned to one nurse), follow him/her and also pick one of the patients to care for. So far, every nurse that I have been with has been very kind, helpful and willing to share their knowledge and experience with me. It's been a very positive experience so far.
