Hi all!

I was wondering what everyone's study habits were like. Do you all read all the chapters assigned? Or do you pick out what you think is important? I didn't read before, except what I "thought" was important, but now I'm trying to stay current with the reading. So for the first week we had 11 chapters assigned for that week  and I'm trying to keep up by reading 2-3 hours a day. What does everyone else do? Also, when it comes test time, how do you review? I was thinking that I would go back and skim through the topics and highlights in the chapter, but not sure if there is a better way? Thanks!

Yeah I know:))All this reading is totally insane:banghead:I have to read like 350 pages from psych nursing and review 4 chapters from pharm related to psych meds.I have only a week left and I'm just starting my reading.I am a slow reader I have to read everything in DETAIL.That is why I have to make sure that I plan my time accordingly to finish all my assigned readings. However I know people who just touch up on main points and sometimes they get better grades than me.Also I am a tactile learner so I have to write a lot of notes to remember the material.

Hope that God is watching over us:):saint:

Lucky! I have 11 chapters assigned plus additional reading in the drug guide the first week in one text for just pharm! Add that to patho and my other two nursing courses and well.......*sigh*

I suppose I should get back to reading and quit dawdling on the internet.

That is all I ever do...lol....I don't mnd...sometimes I find the material interesting...

I usually look at my outlines and course objectives before I sit down to read, that way I know what I should be focussing on. I usually highlight the important stuff and write notes to myself in the margins of my books. When I've finished a chapter, I answer all of the review questions again by writing directly in the book.

When exam time comes up (next monday is the first one, yikes!) all I need is my book and my notes. I just go over the highlighted stuff.

I took a speed reading class and I am so glad I did. Now, I speed read the chapter and make a mark next to the important things I need to come back to. It still takes forever to go through 11 chapters!

I always read EVERYTHING and study as much as I can before the first test. Then, when you figure out how your professor writes the exams, you can adjust. In some classes I might only read the book and not pay much attention to the lectures because they only test out of the book. In others, I might not even need to read the book. It's worked really well for me so far.

honestly, I was getting lower grades when I spent soo much time focusing on finishing each chapter. I stopped reading mid-semester and started buying review books and DOING practice problems, I went from C's to A's. I guess it just depends, I only read all the chapter for classes that Im interested in like psych..

I love psych reading,I find them most interesting out of all the nursing texts.

I also enjoy our psych rotation, and even though by the end of the day I'm emotionally drained.I am learning a lot...

I'm having the same trouble. I don't know how to study for the upcoming exams. They told us memorization is bad in nursing school because we need to KNOW it. I get that but I don't know how to do it. I normally just go through and memorize everything then forget it the next day. :(

The best advice they could give us was to stand back and look at the big picture of what we're reading. Again, I don't know how to do that. It may sound simple but I just don't know how to study. I know it will be easier once I see the first test but I still have to do good on this one.

Anybody have some tips?

Specializes in Taking one day at a time....

Its only been my first week of nursing school, and i have been reading all the chapters assigned... Except for my health assessment class, where they wanted us to read this long chapter on interviewing techniques... I skimmed it and answered the questions in the back of the book (So at least I had an idea..) but I really dont think reading a WHOLE long chapter is necessary for that kind of topic. Should i feel guilty!?! lol.

But other than that, I have been doing all the readings. It makes me feel better when I sit down for the lecture & we go over the powerpoint notes and i am not completely bogged down with new information. And then after class, I'll go over the notes that were discussed. As for studying techniques... Im not really sure how im going to do it. But so far, I have been trying to keep up with everything.. I try to constantly go back and review last weeks lecture, so that i keep reinforcing the new information. And once i reviewed, I'll start on the new stuff for the next lecture.

I definately want to buy some review books though with the types of nursing questions that are asked.... I can do "definition" questions, but its a whole new ball game for me with these nursing questions.:typing
