ACCEPTED in to UNLV SON!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Yay! I was accepted in to the UNLV nursing program on my first try! It really is a dream come true.. but I already have so many questions and fears

I am very curious of current or previous UNLV nursing students and their thoughts about the program in general.

I have my student orientation on July 30th and was wondering if I need my vaccinations by that time.. if so which ones?

Also ... has anyone attempted to hold a SMALL part-time job while in nursing school? I mean only Saturdays and Sundays for 6-8 hours. If so, did it conflict with school at all? Ive heard that advisors strongly suggest you do not work whatsoever...

Im just so nervous! I would greatly appreciate any tips or advice on preparing myself for the fall semester (which starts September 9 correct?). I really was NOT expecting to get in (as negative as that sounds) so I haven't prepared myself AT ALL. Should I start getting supplies sooner than later? When should I begin studying?!

I may be jumping the gun, and Im sure they will answer many of my questions at orientation, but I have often been a procrastinator and I am determined to be ahead of the game throughout nursing school!

Im rambling now but thanks for your advice guys! I appreciate it! :)

Congrats on getting into UNLV. I am a Vegas native who moved up the road to St. George 5 years ago. I would have tried to get into UNLV if I still lived in Sin City :) What high school did you go to??

As far as the job goes... I have a part time job (18 hours a week) and sometimes I find it too much and I ask my boss if I can cut my hours back a little (my boss is very flexible). My job is around school/clinical hours M-F though. Usually I am in class 14 hours a week, clinicals for 18 hours a week and then I study 20-30. Plus I am a wife and mother to three kids. Everyone's life is different, and my advice would be to try it. There are several of my classmates who work full time- graveyard shift jobs.

Good luck to you!!

Thank you so much for all your advice!

I went to Spring Valley High school.

Wow! You have a lot on your plate! That makes me feel better knowing that it IS possible. It seems like people have only been telling me that having a job while in nursing school will never work out. :cheeky: But I only have a fiance and a dog to worry about so I think I can handle it. I will definitely try working for at least a semester.

Thank you !!!!:)

I have also been accepted into the program at UNLV for the fall!! Congrats classmate!! :)

I'm right there along with you because I am super nervous and also tend to procrastinate so I'm trying to find out as much information as possible! To answer your question, I think it all depends on the person. I know that it takes me a little longer to retain information and get things down, so I personally don't plan on working until I get my time management skills down and learn how to study better. That being said, if working is a necessity for you than you can make it happen! Just be sure to balance everything and if your job is flexible hopefully they will understand if you need to cut down on hours some weeks.

I don't believe we need our vaccinations or anything prior to orientation but I'm sure they'll let us know everything that we need to do. Mine is on the 22nd so ill be sure to post how it went!

I'm not really sure what to study ahead of time but for right now I'm just trying to learn a little bit of medical terminology because my friend who is in the program said that helped her a lot. Im more worried about the financial aid because UNLV always seems to be pretty slow when it comes to that stuff. Otherwise, just try to enjoy the free time we have now because I'm sure we won't have much of it come September lol!

If any students who are already in a nursing program have any advice for us please share!! Organizational tips? Study methods? Can't wait to meet you and everyone else who got accepted! :)

Typing from my phone so sry for any typos!

:) Hi classmate! Congrats to you as well! We did it!

I'm right there with you as far as how I learn new information. It takes me a bit to catch on, but then it just clicks and I got it! ;) Working is a bit of a necessity for me, so Ill probably just work weekends for now and see how that goes.

I just really want to be as organized and on it as possible! I can honestly say that is definitely not how my college career has been in the past.. lol:facepalm:

My orientation is on the 30th. Right when I got that call though, I felt like I needed to start doing something at that very moment! I just need to cool my engines. All the excitement and nerves are getting to me...

I hear you on the financial aid situation... :cautious: UNLV always worries me in that area. lol

I think I will definitely pick up a medical terminology book. That could be something small I can browse for the rest of the summer. That and Ive heard from a few people to do a little bit of working out and get in to shape because nursing school is also physically exhausting. You're right though, this is the last time we'll get to relax for a while. Let's enjoy it!

Thank you so much for all your advice!

More tips on school supplies (binders, organizational material, ect) would be greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to meeting you classmate! :inlove:

Thanks again guys! I literally don't know ANYONE in the program. So Ive been feeling really lonely and nervous lately. It's nice to finally talk with other students!! :D

Well good luck to you both! There are a million things I could tell you to "help" get prepared, but honestly you have to find what works for you. There is nothing that I would study over the summer. I never had medical term (and no health care experience) and it was not a problem. I just wrote this post about my first semester

I graduate in December and I will be so glad it is over with :) Is UNLV a 4 semester program??

PS.. go to a Women's Soccer Team Game. my cousin the the goalie! The whole team is amazing

Hi! I am a current UNLV nursing student and remember the frustration of not finding information on the program on AllNurses other than information regarding applying, so i'll help you guys out.

I am only in my first semester but feel that the 9 weeks has given me a pretty good feel for the program. The average week consists of classes three days a week plus one clinical day. Our schedule now is Mon: 8-1pm with open lab from 2-5pm and an organized study session that the school puts on for us from 3-6pm, Tues: 9-4pm, Wed: 8-1:30pm with most people going to their clinical assignments to pick up their patient information to create their care plan after class (takes anywhere from 3-7 hours to complete), Thurs: clinical from 6:30-12:30pm with open lab from 1-4pm, Fri: open lab 1-4pm but some will have their clinical on this day instead of Thursday.

As you can see, the schedule is extremely busy. People are usually up studying until 11pm after class everyday and spend their weekends studying as well just to get C's and B's in the classes. We have anywhere from 1 quiz per week to 2 exams, 1 quiz, and a "competency" where we demonstrate skills (these are strictly pass or fail, and you need to pass them in order to progress in the course).

Two people have dropped out of the program so far from my group due to the schedule. Some people are working 40+ hours a week while others do not work at all. The program isn't extremely difficult in my opinion, it just requires a lot of time management.

They will have you purchase your uniforms, drug test, background check, and set you up with a couple more things at the orientation.

Overall, the program is very well organized and there are a lot of different programs the SON has set up to ensure your success. Remember that the longer you are in the program the more money they make from your tuition, so they try as hard as possible to protect their investment. The classes are fun and the teachers are very helpful. Enjoy, and congratulations on being accepted.

Thank you so much for all of this information!! I can't tell you how helpful all of this is!

Do you register for your classes at orientation as well? And how is it determined which clinical day you will have? That schedule definitely does sound extremely busy so I hope I can learn to get my time management skills down.

Thank you!!! That post really did help a lot as well!

Sometimes I get intimidated because I have heard so many classmates over the years talking about how they work as CNAs, volunteer, or have some kind of experience in the field, even if its minimal. I have not had any experience and Im always worried that Im gonna be behind already!

Congrats to you! You're on the home stretch!!! And yes UNLV is a 4 semester program..

Haha! Ill have to catch a game sometime!! :) Thanks again for your help!
