12 hr shifts and Summer

  1. Hey everyone,

I just found out that I will be taking more summer classes than expected along with my externship. The classes aren't that hard (nutrition and an easy humanities) but they fall in the middle of the day so that I am unable to work my 3 12 hr shifts thru out the week. Sooooo, I am probably going to have to work 2 12's in a row at least. I really wanted to learn this summer as an extern but now feel that I may be really tired on that 2nd or 3rd day. Any advice? I know that caffiene will be my new best friend. Yuck, aren't summers suppose to be fun? :uhoh21:

I was wondering if you ever checked into the classes online? I have taken all my classes online, and find it soooo much easier, especially when you have a busy schedule during the day! Here is a great college, with LOW tuition...it is my college I took all my prereqs with them, including A&P 1 and 11...just click on "courses" to see what is offered (which is basically everything!) ( but not including microbiology that I'm now taking this summer, which is with College of Denver).

    Good luck!!

Thanks for the response! My school has a lot of courses online, but not any of the humanities that I need. But, some good news, I switched one of my classes over to the fall semester so the second half of my summer "vacation" is all externship baby!!! Hahah, I know it doesn't sound that great but I really wanted to be active in it and try to learn as much as possible. But thank you for your help!

I have an externship this summer, too. My scheduling still hasn't been settled and I'm getting a bit frustrated as I have other things to do this summer, too! Until I'm sure of the internship schedule, I feel like I can't commit to anything.

I was supposed to be on evenings, which is what I wanted so I could avoid putting my 10-yo into day care, but last week I got a call from a preceptor who works days and wanted to finalize my schedule! I explained I was supposed to work 3-11, and she said someone else would call me back--but so far no call. I really don't want to have to scramble for day care the week before the externship!

I've had the past two weeks off (ALL rain, ALL the time), the sun has finally come out today and I have one more week off before the externship starts. (If you want to call teaching myself all of cardiac and respiratory "off")--We haven't covered those yet in school, and I really felt I needed to have a handle on them before the externship.

The first week of the externship is orientation--so the timing on that is days and I already have the schedule--but who knows what I'll be doing after that!

I am really lookling forward to this--I really think it's what I need to be a solid and confident student in my second year--I just wish we could get the schedule settled!

At least I'll have four weeks truly off before the school year starts up.

Sounds like a good move to have switched that course to the fall--keep us informed about how the externship progresses--it'll be interesting to compare notes!

Judith, congradulations on your externship! Do you start on the 1st as well? I saw that you are in the ED, lucky! That is where I wanted to be but this hospital where I am does not offer one there. So I choose Telemetry (although I'm not a huge fan of the floor). Caridac is my favorite area so I am excited about it. Good luck with the childcare issues.
