Male Chest Hair and Scrub Tops

I just stopped wearing the under t-shirt because it gets so warm!! Ummm...men are naturally hairy and women aren't. I have given this little thought, but maybe should think some more...I need to think about how patients will perceive things. AND YET even that can be carried to the point of chaos...all points taken here, and we are professionals. You definitely got me thinking on this again! Thanks, Dan

You know if this question was about women and chest hair I guarantee we would need to pluck it, shave it, sugar it, thread it, wax it, laser it or some other form of torture.

Cover it up we are at work not a club.

I vote for whichever option is safer for the patient, safer for the nurse, and increases the standing of nursing as a profession. Accordingly, I propose someone perform some research on the matter so that we can make an evidenced-based decision.

Where shall we find the funding?

Yeah, but how about the ladies having to wear those caps just because they were female!!!!

I'm a man, and a nurse, with... er... significant chest hair.

I'd never go without a t-shirt because I think it looks unprofessional.

I might as well show a little plumber's crack when I bend down to empty a foley.

Chest hair! We're worried about that? Has anybody mentioned that some scrub tops show INCHES of cleavage on women. You don't mean to see, you just walk up to the desk, and look down, and THERE IT IS! Or they bend down to help someone and their breasts about fall out the top of their top. I need to hide my eyes. I'm embarrassed for people who aren't embarrassed for themselves. "Excuse me ma'am. Are you aware that approximately half of each of your breast are visible to me, and I barely (no pun intended) know you?" Make the women wear a t-shirt underneath, for crying out loud!

This isn't anything I've ever thought of. I mean..why is it offensive? If they require men to cover the chest hair, why not arm hair, beards etc...? Why is hair offensive?

Bottom line, chest hair is nasty!!!!!!!! At least that's the concensus at my hospital tonight, all the nurses here agree (both female and male)! Chest hair should never show-because if you have it you should shave it immediately!!!!

Trimmed, I would say, but perhaps it depends on the chest hair. A little tuft or a forest?

so should men AND WOMEN with hairy arms be required to wear long sleeves? What would be limit on hairiness be to go without a t-shirt? who would do the inspection of males nurses to see who should wear the undergarment? And wouldn't adding another layer to men's clothing cause more sweating and thus more body odor and underarm stains? that is even worse than some chest hair.
