I currently work in TX in Dallas area. It is a smaller hospital and I work currently in nursery. They have typically called off nurses 1-2 shifts per week. These are 12 hr. shifts! This means less than part time. So several of the nurses have had to get second jobs. The hospital has treated everyone horribly when they find out they are working 2nd jobs. I am not sure what they expect! I know that they can not have us work when there is a low census, but do not be so offended when we are trying to make ends meet! If we work on call at any of the other sister hospitals, some of the staff feel they are cancelled more often. It is crazy because there is no staffing rules they follow. Prn will work when full time is called off. That is when a nursing organization (union) with a contract of some kind would be benificial. There is always a way to get around various rules but at least it would be a start.

I was told by a PICU nurse there that Sutter Health has a hiring freeze in effect.

The hospice nurse caring for my dad said that they are all facing multiple mandatory days off each month.

Why do we keep hearing this drivel about the "nursing shortage?"

wow,

here in OH freezes are normal, more time of the year spent in freezes than hiring.

i'm really dissapointed to hear larger states with this problem, as i am planning on moving out of state in the next few years, and i always heard about shortages in states like FLA, NY, Ca, etc.

anyone not seen this prob? and where?

I am a new nurse in Saint Louis. I have been sent home/told not to come in 3 times in the last month. We have had low census since I was hired on....Like I was wondering why they even hired me or the other 3 nurses that started with me, but apparently this is a new thing.

Same here in MA. Plenty of new construction but at the same time
talk of a RIF in certain parts of the hospital.

In Central New York we are hiring. Every hospital in the area is hurting for nurses. There are quite a few overtime slots available at my facility. I always save some of my time off for end of the year low census, but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon. I haven't been called off for low census in probably close to 9 months.

I did apply at Albany Medical Center but will have to decide if the cut in pay plus travel is a good move right now.
I was working a shift last night and 2.5 hrs into the shift management
calls me and tells me they need me to leave. They have too many
nurses on, they can replace me with a therapist (work in psych).

some of the state hospitals have had a hiring freeze
in this area you do not have a large influction during winter months and the census remains much the same except for holiday periods
i don't know any nurses who want a job that does not have one

This is what has happened to me. I went on an interview. I got offered same rate as the place I am employed at now. I was happy with that because the third shift differentials were 7 dollars instead of 2.50 . I job shadowed and then emailed the lady saying I wanted the position. She emailed back and said the Hosp put a hiring freeze and she would contact me when its done. I was unbelieving until I heard from a few others who worked there saying there was in fact a hiring freeze.
I also heard that the lady emaield the girl i shadowed asking how it went and she said nothing but great things. So Why am i still worried? I want this job BIG time. The shift diff and all the benefits are alot better and I thought I had it until this speedbump. I guess I am just bummed out because i really want out of my current job

Just wondering if there is any possiblity that the freezes are related to losses in investments as opposed to patients census.
