I think most of our Doc's know that if you get called Dr. so & so in private you've done something to pi$$ the nurses off.

Oh so true Debbey!!

Heh, that's true with the doctors themselves too, I've noticed...that calling them by Dr. _____. When one is upset with the other, you can certainly tell when they start addressing each other as "Doctor" instead of using first names....

I'm a student, so it might be a little different.

With Med students, its alway their first name. When residents, its first names too. The older ones, I usually refer to as Dr. ____ mostly because they barely give the older nurses the time of day, so I expect even less.

In school, once we became Juniors, all professors are called by there first names, as they have explained that since we are now practicing student nurses, we are not all colleages, which makes for a nice environment.

Hey Dave-
Read somewhere else that you are a chronic flirt? Hmmm..nice to meet ya. Join the club.

I am on a first name basis with a select few - mostly residents whom I have associated with outside of work. I am on a first name basis with approximately ONE attending - and that was after working with her for 4 years. Otherwise, I call all the MD's by Dr. So and So, and ALWAYS use this title when speaking to or in front of patients.

All docs older than me, and those I want to keep at arms length (for whatever reason) I call by Dr ____. Usually it's the ones I respect and get along with that I call by the first name.

We have a married couple on the medical staff, they are called by first names so that we know who we are talking about. One of them had a little tantrum and wanted to be Dr. ___. I agree- in front of patients, but with the entire nursing staff incensed that he had gotten up on his high horse they made a point of calling him by his first name. I think he realized he got better treatment when he kept his mouth shut.

<mumbles> suzy's in heat again..hehe <ducks>

Okay, interesting subject. I have a totally different perspective. I refuse to call a doctor by their first name, even if that's how they introduce themselves to me. Often residents and some attendings will tell a nurse to call them by their first name, but I reply, "No, you earned the right to be called Dr, and if it's okay with you that's how I prefer to address you". As for how they address me, I could care less. How I'm address will not make me feel less or more mature/professional. If they're personal friends, who are MD's, then yes, I call them by their first names AWAY from work, never at work. Maybe it's a southern thing, it just feels disrespectful any other way.

Since I'm as old or older than most of the attendings, and have been doing neonatology about as long, I call most of them by their 1st name, and they do likewise. Sometimes I call the head of the unit, "El Jefe`" or "HMFIC". I've actually had name tags made for him, but he's too chicken to wear them!

In front of the pts, I call the attendings "Dr.", but the fellows and residents often introduce themselves to the parents by their 1st names. I sort of follow their lead.

I introduce myself by saying, Hi! My name is Sandi, and I'm you're nurse du jour"

Default Well this is interesting......
As my first name is Bobette I have been called many variations of the correct pronunication.. My favorite is from a Pakisitani doc we have who loves to call me Boobette..He even came in the med room one day and asked how my boobs were and I said, " Fine, thanks for asking." Heck when I go to lunch I sign out as Boobette. Everyone knows where I am.. Actually prefer bobbi. Yes with a small case first letter.. See, I know who I am I don't need a capital letter to start my name.... Respect comes from within just like love and no one, bar none, can give that to you but yourself.....

May the sun shine brightly on you, in peace, and may the wind be always at you back or something like that....
