Molly and Julie, I'm in agreement with you both. I like the fact that the nursing uniforms of old distinquished nurses from others. I always wondered whose idea it was to have nurses dress so much like housekeeping. You'd think it would be important for a patient to recognize that the person in thier room is or isn't a nurse, and nursing uniforms used to be easily recognizable, though not neccesarily flattering.

In spite of this, I'm not so sure I would be too happy about donning a cap every morning, either. Just one more thing needing washed and pressed. fuhgetaboutit.

Graduated in 1978. Had a pinning ceremony.
My pin is a dark red cross and I still wear it. Never owned a nursing cap. The school stopped issuing them in the 70's.

I always wanted a cape. I never had one as the year I started the BSN program was the first year they dropped the cape and ordered ugly navy coats with sky blue lining.

So about a year ago I found one on ebay for $20 andordered it. It is soooo warm!

I had a pin, a cap and a cape. The cape was navy w/a gray lining, and our initials in the back. I don't have it any more.
My pin is attached to my stethescope. It's shaped like a curvy shield, and has Mary on it. (Any of you who are Catholics know who Our Lady of Lourdes is and looks like--that's it.) I'll see if I can find the web site.
The cap was white with a black stripe. I still remember the nun sitting at a conference table with 30 caps in front of her, a spool of black velvet ribbon and a stapler.
The first cap they gave us had a denim blue facing. At the end of the first year, we had a capping ceremony; we got to wear the bib part of our aprons--up til then, we just wore the skirt, and that is the first and only time a nun ever told us to "rat" our hair so she would have something to pin it to. The 2 guys in our class were given caps as souvenirs. So we wore a plain white cap the 2nd year, and when we became seniors, they gave us one with a blue velvet stripe.
Yeah, it's silly and not at all practical these days, but I am very sentimental, and all those caps are upstairs in my closet right now!

www.ololnursing.com/default.html is the website for the school, it has a picture of the design used on the pin.

While the caps are no longer worn, our class has requested that we be given caps at our graduation ceremony. We have two ceremonies that we attend. We have one at our nursing school and then another when we walk with the rest of the university.

Our class feels tradition is very important and should be kept alive even though nurses no longer wear caps. When traditions stop, something always seems to be lost.

Yipes, No wonder patients don't know who the RN /LPN is in the hospital if your not wearing your pins! C'mon, a pin wont' fall off any faster on a srcub top than it will on a cotton/polyester uniform. Wore mine since 1977, even when doing home care and wearing street clothes and lab coat till two years ago working in intake/um. Still wear it along with ID badge on the occasional times I chose to work extra WE staffing.

Having family frequently in Phila area hospitals over that past two years, it even upsets me to see the nurses turn their ID badge backwards, "cause they don't like their own picture". I WANT to know who is caring for my loved ones. We have only ourselves to blame for being lumped with room charges and housekeeping staff. Only 25% ever introduced themselves when coming into a room at shift change....lets think about what image were presenting......before all that's left is the nursing manequin Annie!

Recaps, had two: small plain from LPN school ( n momento box) and Permastarch tradional cap with light blue college emblem on the side, same as pin. Gave that up in late 80's after fight with new fangled IV pumps, vents and so many tubes on respitatory/telemtry unit. Still in bottom of one of my dresser drawers. Took it out this year and considered wearing it at the nursing rally I had but opted for Baseball caps with logo other RNs wore.

Hi,
I had both a cap and a pin. The cap was of a generic variety with burgundy stripes. (lost after my grad photos were taken). My pin is a gold octagon with a pink rose in the center (Alberta's provincial flower). When I wore and laundered my own uniforms, I wore it all the time. Now that I wear hospital scrubs, I'm afraid that it'll get lost in the laundry.

Yes, I had a pin. It is gold in color with a latern in the center of a circular pin with the schoold name around the border and LPN in the middle of it!

The girls in my class had a white starched/formed cap with purple strips indicating class status/semester. I as a mle was denied the oppurtunity to have one much less having to clean and apply those ribbon strips! LOL

I do however want one to put on my shelf with my diploma! Maybe have a picture taken with it on, LOL! Just to have as a reminder and since I should have had one as a student and a graduate! Today members of my school who are male get the cap during a capping ceromony the same as the girls at the end of the first semester! I do not think it becomes part of the school uniform like the shirt, name tag or the school patch.

Had a cap with the little clear tote bag to carry it to and home from work. It was your basic nursing cap with a velvet light blue stripe on each side. Wore it about a month after graduation which was 24 years ago. God only knows what happened to it. Also had the pin , round 24k gold with the school emblem on it and I lost it some how. Then it was $35. How could I get another one. Call the school and order it??? Any suggestions?

Check the pawnshops near the school! My daughter and I were window shopping on the way to the bank and saw a necklace in a pawnshop window.

As we were about to leave for some reason I asked did they have any nursing pins. The guy pulled out a huge ziplock bag FULL of pins, rings, bracelets etc that the univ. students had pawned and never redeemed. He periodically sold them all to be melted down into gold.

I swear, my daughter found an Artcarved 14kt Signet school ring there.....she got it for ONLY the price of the weight of the gold! I think it was like $50. The ring company changed the year, degree, and even did her name engraving for about $25 !

She got a $500 ring for $75. We have told this story over and over and several of our friends also have gotten theirs this way.

I, on the other hand, only found a brass version of my (stolen/lost gold) school pin. He gave it to me for $5. But heck.....at least I have one now.
