Are your hospitals only hiring new grads that are "cream of the crop"?

Updated Oct 29, 2009 at 03:11 PM by brian

This thread is in response to this news post: Only hiring new grads that are "cream of the crop"?

"The benefit to them is that there are so many new grads looking for work they are able to get the cream of the crop, then train them in a standardized way through the residency program," Krozek explained. "
What do you think?

Another interesting quote:
"The baby-boomer nurses won't be the first to leave," he said. "The first will likely be the Gen Xers and Gen Yers who are disgruntled. They may not see a career path for themselves with the older nurses still in place. And even if they don't leave right away, they'll be looking for greener pastures."
The article suggests for new grads to go back to school and advance their education if they can not find work, I am very grateful for my job; I was so burnt out on school I could not imagine going back for my masters this soon!

I am a Gen-X.

I don't know what they are talking about "career paths" waiting for the boomers--etc.,

I have a lot of pressure from a LOT of people waiting for me to finish advanced practice. I feel that pressure and I don't like it.

I am not going to school to please people and I feel that I will disappoint many when I choose.

Oh well.

Cream of crop new-hires? Only if they are experienced.

NO grads.

Due to this recession, i HAD no choice but to go back to get my MSN. Plus i'm stuck with my BSN loans, so i had to defer it by going back to school. I knew eventually i wanted to get my MSN, so i figured since i ain't got no job mind as well do it now. School is actually keepin my sane since i'm so frustrated still not being able to land a new grad position. Lucky for those who were able to!!!

Cream of the crop new grad? No such thing. All brandy new nurses come out of school with one thing in common-they know jack ^%#* , even though many think they know everything I remember coming out of school thinking I knew it all until I got on the unit and realized I had SOOOOO much to learn. It was quite humbling. And eight years later, I am still learning

FYI: I moved this discussion thread from the news section to the General Nursing Discussion Forum. I also added a link to the original news item in the first post of this thread. I've also added a poll question as well.

It will be good to hear feedback from all of you on this subject. Carry on
