written up

Today at work on a med surg floor a seasoned nurse was written up for documenting her pain assessment 3 minutes late. Apparently you have a certain amount of time to document the effectiveness of the patient's pain med and she was 3 minutes late doing it. I guess the manager doesn't have enough work to do. This nurses always goes all out for her patients and this feels like a slap in the face. I would never tell anyone these days to become a nurse. Stuff like this is pure ********.

I agree that being written up because you charted pain relief 3 minutes late is totally ridiculous. I think I would have handed them my resignation.

However, I don't see any reason to tell anyone not to become a nurse. You may be unhappy but there are many who are happy and wouldn't change professions. Let people decide for themselves without negative comments

wow, that manager needs to be written up! that's just plain silly. So long as good patient care was provided, all of the pt's interventions were completed on time, and the documentation is done for the correct time by the end of shift, what does it matter?

What is really important here? Was the nurse attentive and attempting to relieve pain or the documentation? Pretty clearly the answer is patient comfort. I would love to be the union steward in this case.

Writing someone up for something so silly is usually the writing on the wall. She might want to start jobhunting--this is the nit-picky stuff that happens in ALL FIELDS when someone wants you gone.

That really is a bunch of crap. I think of how many times whole medications and treatments have not been done at scheduled times. This nurse must work on a unit where you have 1-2 patients and have time for stuff like bathing, PM care, therapeutic massage etc instead of scrambling to get the bare minimum done.

Sounds like that manager has a bit too much time on their hands if they have time to notice something like that. I mean, come on!!

That's very true. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day; she's a lab tech. She once got written up for not bringing the right kind of salad to a departmental lunch. (Her manager told her to bring pea salad, my friend had never made pea salad and brought something else; the manager wrote her up. Obviously a pea brain!)

It's time for this good, experienced nurse to polish up her resume and start looking. Being three minutes late with a pain re-assessment is just the sort of technicality that gets used to grease the skids under someone. If I were her co-workers, I'd be right behind her in line for the door.
