working in physician office

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi -

I am an RN of nearly a year, been working on a ICU/post ICU unit as a new grad. I am considering accepting a position in a physician family practice office because 12.5 hour nights are not working out for me as a single parent of 3, 2 of whom have special needs.

My question is: those of you who work or have worked in doctor offices as RN , what did you like or not like about it??

Thanks,

Im working in a physicians office now as the triage nurse. Make SURE you know what your duties will be. Triage? I sit in an office and answer the phone all day!

NOT what I wanted....and they only have one nurse, they use med techs for everything....and Im so frustrated watching them fumble their way through stuff I could do in two seconds...but no....I have to talk to a pt about whether they should keep taking prednisone or get that MRI....and of course its 95% about narcotics.

I dont know. to be fair, the office is in transition. The med techs are all new. But, just make sure you are very clear what your role and responsibilities will be.

This sounded like the perfect job. 8 to 5, and I have small boys in school.

Its not. Im going crazy.

I have worked in several Dr's offices. For the most part I really enjoyed the jobs. My first job out of nursing school was in a large family practice office and I learned so much there.

I have also worked in several offices where there were medical assistants and I have found most of them competent.

There is alot of phone work at a Dr's office and the work can be fast and crazy at times.

It sounds like a Dr's office schedule would work out for you and your children.

One nice thing about nursing is there are so many choices.

Another job possibility is school nurse if your kids are school age.

I hope things work out for you and your family.

Hi, I love working in the office setting, wouldn't have it any other way. Yes, it can be crazy busy at times, but I'd rather work my butt off while I'm there and have off weekends and Holidays. If other time off is needed, I've found there is more flexibility in the office than the hospital. I do make less money in the office, but to me it is worth it. It's a different kind of stress than hospital work. My office is family practice. I like that best because you see something new everyday, and you really get to know some of your patients- it's great!:redbeathe
