Why I am not Surprised by Joy Behar's Ignorant Comments

Joy Behar of The View may have well-informed opinions on many topics, but her views on nursing are downright ignorant. It isn’t surprising that she doesn’t know what she’s talking about where nurses are concerned because most of the public doesn’t know, either. Nurses Announcements Archive Article

In case you missed it, a "comedian" on the talk television show The View has some very misguided notions about what it takes to be a nurse. Joy Behar, long-time member of the all women panel on the social commentary show, made her ignorance about nurses very clear with some of the comments she made regarding the profession.

It all started with the very brave actions of Miss Colorado in the Miss America Pageant. The contestant appeared on the show during the talent section dressed in work scrubs with a stethoscope around her neck. She explained how her talent was for nursing, helping people, and caring for others when they are at their worst.

Being fashionably feminist, Behar and the other women on the panel are against pageants, but that is an opinion for another site. She began mocking Miss Colorado saying that she was wearing a "doctor's stethoscope" and was dressed in a "nurse's costume." Her comments showed no respect for the profession and what we do on a day to day basis. The next day, after much public backlash, Behar "apologized" by saying that she was only making fun of the pageant and the comments against nurses were only jokes.

Nurses have been outraged all across the internet, and rightly so. In fact, a Facebook group called "Show Me Your Stethoscope" has over 600,000 members and hundreds of stethoscope selfies in just the few days since the comments.

Although Behar's comments are surprising, what is not is her ignorance. As a nurse, I am not surprised that someone in the spotlight knows very little of what nurses actually do. In fact, I was not aware of it until I put on those scrubs and slung a stethoscope around my neck. No one knows what it is like to be in those shoes, enduring the soaring rush of saving a life and the devastating blow of losing a patient.

Traditionally, nurses are seen as doctor's secretaries, and this fueled Behar's comments. Of course a nurse wouldn't need a stethoscope: she -- always a she -- would only need a clipboard to take notes for the doctor. It doesn't occur to the media or the public that nurses are just as involved in hard core medicine as doctors are. As I've always said, give me a nurse with 20 years experience over an intern any day.

I believe that this ignorance arises from how nurses are portrayed in the media. When the public thinks of nurses, they think of Florence Nightingale. Nursing has changed considerably since then! What other nurses can stand up as role models, though, that could inform the public of the very serious work done by nurses?

Take entertainment. Nurse Jackie, though well known among nurses, has a cult following. She isn't exactly a role model, either. Another nurse show that aired on TNT didn't earn enough ratings, even though it still didn't show nurses in their true light. Grey's Anatomy and House focused so much on the lives of the doctors that they never showed what nurses do.

And that's the problem. No one knows what nurses do because no one has shown them. What Behar said was deplorable, ignorant, misinformed, and uneducated, but not surprising. A media talking head would have no idea what goes on in the trenches of a nursing shift. How could they? No one has told them and no one has shown them.

More education is needed for the general public about what nurses do. We don't just pass pills. We don't just take orders from the doctor. We don't just wipe behinds. We listen to lung sounds. We assess if someone is dying. We make the call whether to call the doctor or not. We are at the bedside for eight to 12 hours, and we see more of the patient than the doctor ever will. We are the thin white line that exists to protect and serve the patients who need us.

Nursing skills matter.

Fire away at Behar and get the media's attention. Eradicate this ignorance, but don't be surprised. Don't think they should know better. Nurses are misrepresented in nearly every sphere. It just took one supposedly funny person's ignorant comments to cast light on that fact.

A guest on the show is seen in a video today saying that she overheard Michelle, in the back of the studio, saying that nursing isn't a real profession and nurses are just wanna-be doctors.

It doesn't matter if it was nursing, teaching, accounting, stay-at-home moms, etc. I'm proud that we have stood up for this nurse and the profession instead of "brushing off" the on-air bashing of one single person who represents so much more than just herself.

if we wanted to be doctors we would have gone to med school lol.

what people dont seem to understand is that even if u were one of those people that went into nursing or went to med school for the $ aspect, you flunk out very quickly-- because, no amount of money could really make someone want to be elbow deep in a rotting decubitus in a c.diff patient to clean it and debride it.- on a regular basis :mask:

if miss michelle collins is every one of our patients we will treat her like any one of our other pts that are less than desireable, because its who we are as a profession and people, but her guilt for spewing this negativity and ignorant nonsense will eat her alive eventually, when shes touched by the golden hearts and warm hands of her nurses who care for her ;)

My husband just shakes head sometimes at the fact that I love nursing. "They'd have to pay me a couple million dollars a year to get me to do what you do."

I should say that I only work part time now. If I was putting in ungodly hours still, I might agree with him.

i try to explain things i do, or things i see and my bf is like..omg thats gross dont talk about that at dinner! LOL. but yeah. its def. an acquired taste to be a medical professional of any kind!

Actually Joy Behar's opinions on pageants are spot on. Miss Colorado/Kelley Johnson lost her identity when she chose the beauty pageant route. Big businesses like J&J also know what they are doing when they invest in the beauty pageant contestants. I don't know exactly how or why she chose nursing but the scholarships offered by the health care companies associated with the pageants she has won may have played a role.

Ms. Johnson's earlier talent had been playing the piano. Once you get to the national level of pageants, you have advisors advising you. Many of these contestants are seeking a career as a celebrity in Hollywood. Her social media pages are reading like billboards for various companies under the guise of "do good" health care for publicity which improves their bottom line.

In her earlier interviews, she listed celebrities she admired and rarely if ever mentioned nursing except for being a student which is now huge in the pageant world as long as they still look glamorous in a swimsuit. She hit up the celebrities who are known for putting people on their show just for some flattery. Her statements like "putting Ellen DeGeneres head on a $10 bill" was sure to attract some attention. Why not mention some famous female scientist instead? That would not have gotten her on TV shows as she is now appearing on now. She is in such demand one has to wonder when she will have time for her Miss America responsibilities. This is all thanks to nurses. Some are placing bets as to when she drops the emphasis on her RN title and solely identifies as a world celebrity. Maybe she'll get asked to play a nurse to launch her acting career. She didn't spend years studying music for nothing.

Ms. Johnson' only nurse experiences were probably in the school clinicals. I doubt if she has ever had time to work as one with all the responsibilities of public appearances from her other beauty contest wins. I doubt if she ever will work as an RN and probably will not need to now. I seriously doubt if she ever thought that winning a beauty contest will get her a cool ICU or ER job. At a beautiful 6'2" and brains too along with some great support from the right sponsors, she has a fantastic future in Hollywood. Sex sells and nurses are only seeing one side. There are other sides of her nursing "costume" which is fueling some in very blatant thoughts of sex and nurses in all forms of advertisement. But, that is okay because all talk is good talk on the path to being a celebrity. Joy Behar probably knows this better than anyone. Yesterday few knew who she was and few cared about who she was. Today she is a household name thanks to nurses. She has probably played the "Let's Gain Celebrity Status" for decades by talking about things people wanted to hear and saying some very unpopular things. Ms. Behar's choice of words were probably not the best but for those of us who have seen through the hype of beauty pageants, we do agree with her overall message.

Luckily the contestants are now working the system to their gain better reaping the rewards even if they do have a room full of advisors invested in potential earnings and riders on their capes. They know they have to play the airhead with the cute but stupid comments and their boobs leading as we saw on these shows. Someone in scrubs and a stethoscope does stand out but not enough for the winning vote. Scrubs just don't show off the body enough.

BTW: I have tried to refer to Miss Colorado, Miss America and the "nurse on the pageant" by her name Kelley Johnson. This is to give her respect and that no matter what paths she will take, she shouldn't lose her identity as some many do in beauty pageants, healthcare or whatever profession. Her name may also become a household word someday and this pageant will just be a stepping stone for her future. Well played young lady!

I'm sure the "showmeyourstethoscope" campaign will benefit nurses about as much as the million like campaigns benefit starving children in third world nations. None. There is a cognitive bias out there that has proven that taking action on Facebook gives people the satisfaction in people's minds of actually helping the problem, but really doesn't do anything since your just clicking a like button and/or posting a selfie holding "a doctors stethoscope"

it does make nurses look like a bunch of whiney babies though.

Keep up the good work. Selfies change the world

I certainly DON'T watch that show...but I saw a clip...just enough to hear Joy B. say, "What is she doing with a DOCTOR'S stethoscope around her neck?" That's the View...they don't know WTH they are talking about. LOL

To fully understand the comment "What is she doing with a DOCTOR'S stethoscope around her neck?" one would have had to watch the beauty pageant in its entirety. If you do that and survive with your IQ intact you would see the humor in that statement. Usually after the one line introductions the young women must give about themselves, I feel as dumb as a rock for even trying to watch a pageant. It was probably not meant as an attack on nurses but to show how silly and stupid these pageants still make these young women out to be. Given the whole gist of the show, it is amazing to see someone display what might be a brain in their head even though most are now college educated. The show is not scripted for that. But, this is what happens when one small portion is taken out of context of a bigger picture. Had more not so flattering cringe moments for women been shown along with Miss Colorado's clip, the statement might have made more sense and maybe a whole different story line for demeaning the real talent and education of these young women by the pageant industry. But, again it is the contestant's choice to become an object on stage and to come up (with the help of her advisors) with something to get noticed. The nurses posting on social media have made it about them from on small clip and ignored the bigger essence of the pageant and its representation of educated young women still with a 1970s attitude.

Dear Joy Behar,

I also am just a nurse. I would love to come on your show and share with your audience just what it is nurses do. I will pay for my own expenses.

Best,

Nurse Beth

Behar is TOXIC.

Talking about her in any way shape or form will fuel hate and toxicity. She has no honor. No class. And is full of so much hate it gets misdirected at the most innocent of people. If anything, demand she be fired, with no severance. She is disgusting. Overall, I lack the vocabulary without using profanity to share my absolute disgust of her and her ilk.

Well, that escalated quickly...

Your disdain about pageantry is palpable. Your views are obvious.

What this has to do with talk show hosts insulting an entire profession is unknown to me.
