Why do hiring managers say they will call and don't???

I know there are those of you out there that are hiring managers..I realize you get busy and have staffing issues plus a ton of others..but, I've been on 2 interviews in the last 2 weeks where I've been told I would "definitely" hear something "one way or the other within a week to 10 days" - I didn't hear from either so I did contact them. One has yet to reply back, the other told me she was checking references on those she was interested in - mine included - and would make a decision by the end of the week. It's now been another week past that time and I've heard nothing. I don't want to pester her but I would like to know something before I go applying for/interviewing for the 2nd job I want.:uhoh3:

I hate interviewing...its like dating all over again...:lol2:

Yep, it is a lot like dating. If they want you, they let you know. Hanging out hoping they want you is refusing to look squarely in the face that 98% of the time that lack of a call means they don't.

Keep interviewing. Worst that happens is you have more than one offer to choose from.

Am so glad you mentioned the reference checks...I too have never understood this..I do understand checking former employment but really, I am not about to put someone down that I didn't work with for long or whatever. I get along with everyone but I do stay to myself but do help out - I worked PRN float so I was all over the last hospital I worked at - people knew me but didn't know me if that makes sense so its difficult to put down someone that new my work consistently because the only consistent thing was I floated! I have decided to just stay where I am at for now..as much as I really do not want to you are so right that it is an employers market. I am tired of applying, interviewing, the whole thing. I think a lot for me is health care/nursing has changed soooo much in the past 10 years. I know its bound to happen but...I have been on here whining enough lately..lol...so, if I hear back from the 2 that are hanging out there, so be it, if not, I am going to stay where I'm at and leave it alone until next year. It gets depressing. Thanks everyone..

Hello everyone. First of all I wanted to say thank you to all of you who share their thoughts, advices and knowledge on every topic here in allnurses. It helped me a lot from taking the nclex to finding my first RN job. I am a RN who worked in a SNF in CA and moved to TX, no acute experience, and just got done with my first ever HOSPITAL interview process (it's a big deal for me :o) TODAY. I am just concerned and anxious about on how long will I wait til I get a call from them? This is a big hospital in Northern Texas.

I sent my applications online via their website since July of this year and applied on all the open RN positions they have. Finally I got my first call from the hospital's HR coordinator on 09/15/2011 to set up a behavioral interview on 09/19/2011. I went to the behavioral interview by the HR Coordinator, she said I did good, asked me which areas do I feel like I will be more comfortable with (like which areas would be an easier transition for me since I don't have an acute experience) and told me that she will forward it to the nurse manager and that I should receive a call in 2 days from the nurse manager of this particular unit which is the Neuroscience/stroke unit. No call/email after 2 days, so I decided to call the HR coordinator and left a message. She didn't call me back but hours later that day, I received an email from the nurse manager if we could set up a date for an interview by her. So I was thrilled and replied her back (this was Thursday 09/22/11) but I didn't get an email response from her after. The following day, I received a call from her to set up an interview for Tuesday 09/27/2011. I went to the interview, she asked me a couple of questions and said I did good. Interview lasted for about 30 mins and I think it went well. She gave me a tour of the unit and I met some of the staff. After the interview, she asked me if I could come back the following day for the Peer Interview which will be conducted by 2 RNs from the floor. She also told me that she isn't going to be the one who will hire me (?) but the RNs who will do the peer interview (?). I didn't understand what she meant. So I went for that interview this afternoon, they asked me similar questions from the previous interview and I think it went well too coz one of them verbalized she couldn't see any bad answers from me. I asked them how long will I wait before I can receive a call from them and they said "I'm not sure, maybe NEXT WEEK" and that the nurse manager will make the decision of hiring me or not (?).

I'm confused. Is that a bad sign? Are they just being nice?

Then I checked their website for my application and saw that the "status" of the position I applied for that was "forwarded to manager" on previous status is now "Application filed, not hired", dated 09/28/2011. :'(

I am so anxious and depressed right now. I am trying to be patient in looking for an acute experience. I feel like I don't feel complete as a nurse if I don't get an experience in the acute setting. I am currently looking for a job since I just moved here to TX about a month ago. This is a big deal for me and I am very happy to know that I got a call from a hospital, it's like they believe I was good enough to go for an interview atleast, for the position.

I don't know guys. What do you think? Should I wait for them to call me back? Thank you so much.

I definitely would call them...HR and if you don't get an answer then politely call the nurse manager..you should at least be told you weren't hired instead of finding out online. I know some on here will disagree with me, and maybe it's because I don't have the best attitude about nursing in general right now, but I think the hiring managers - not all but some - need to STOP this panel interview thing and make the decision themselves. They are suppose to be the boss. I also think they need to be held accountable for following up as they say they will so my advice, call. Be nice, be professional but call.

Thank you for your honesty. I take everything personally and the whole job search thing is bringing me down. In my previous career I was appreciated and respected. Being a new grad, I am expected to act professional, but I am not treated that way in return. Oh well, I am knee deep in school debt and have to keep looking.

As a hiring manager, I want to know that person is really interested and want them to keep calling me. You're not pestering...you're letting them know you really want to work there. We're hiring all the time for home health nurses and I appreciate when a potential new hire keeps calling. If your a person we can not hire due to various reasons and you keep calling, we'll let you know so you won't feel like you're hanging on. From my perspective, keep calling!!!

Thanks everyone for replying. I really appreciate it. Will it be a good time to call them tomorrow or will I wait for atleast a week? Right now I'm still waiting for miracle calls from all the facilities and hospitals I applied to. I applied in every nursing facility/ hospital nearby. :(

Hello everyone! Thank you to all for you support! Just want to update and give you the good news that I was hired! I was screaming and crying after the phone call from the HR offering me a job! God knows how important to me this is and He truly is my Miracle Maker. It took only a day of waiting, I'm glad! Good luck to everyone who's going to have their job interviews! This site has helped me so much in so many ways and I will continue to get and learn advices from you! Thanks everyone for sharing with me this wonderful experience of mine. :)
