Which fields of nursing have the most stable clients

I found out that (at least for me):

unstable patient = stress = me not happy.

So I was wondering which nursing fields have the most medically stable clients? Psych, MD's office, public health, and clinics are some that come to mind... does anyone agree/disagree or have any thoughts? Thanks.

Every person is different, of course; I actually found elementary school nursing to be one of the most stressful jobs I ever held.

THIS

I'm sorry to be a downer, but most of nursing IS stressful.

Home health can be stressful, LTC can be stressful, clinics have emergencies too.

I did Medicare chart reviews; less stress, however reading and interpreting awful handwriting can be stressful, even trying to capture information so that the person can have their procedures and treatment covered,* then you can't can be stressful; depends on the person. This job wasn't for me. I went back into the trenches...:)

I'm with GrnTea; OP, I need more clarification.

*I meant it may or may not be stressful...it depends on the individual...

I think something like day surgery or school nursing would completely stress me out. When I was a new grad I was saying that a pt made me nervous because he was so sick. He had just about every diagnosis under the sun...easier to list what wasn't wrong with him than what was. A Doc told me that he preferred pts like that because if something does go wrong it's not unexpected. After working 13 years I totally agree! The pts that make me nervous are the healthy ones because if something goes bad it goes REALLY BAD!

Forensic. Dead is the most stable anyone ever will be.

This made me almost fall off my chair :roflmao:

I wouldn't assume that just because your patients are relatively stable, that you won't be stressed out.

Ambulatory clinics have few emergencies, but that doesn't mean they're not stressful. Whiny patients. Condescending doctors. Catty gossip. I personally would find working in any office environment to be very stressful, simply because I hate the very idea of working in an office.

And outpatient surgery floors, yeah, they don't have anywhere near as many emergencies as the med/surg floors, but they are very fast paced. The nurses are under a lot of pressure to prep these people fast and get them discharged fast. I can see that as being very stressful.

Umm... disagree.

But I'm geriatric psych and I've dealt with more than my share of chest pain, vitals in the toilet, cracked heads and hips, sepsis, wonky labs and brittle diabetics.

We then sprinkle behavioral emergencies on top for good measure.

Sadly, I'm sure my job is still not as intense as other fields, but what do I really know?

Nurses from the other psych units dread our unit.

I work in Geri psych also. I've worked as a med surg telemetry nurse before that and trust me psych is 10000x better than that. For the most part you know what ur dealings with. When I was doing med surg I was giving blood transfusions, iv antibiotics, ventilator patients and the list goes on.. I was having chest pain from working there!

And yes I will say it again psych is definitely more laid back!
