Whats to Enjoy about Nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm a student and have been reading up on some of these forums and many, many nurses would leave their jobs if they didn't need the money. Everyone continually talks about how stressful their jobs are based on scheduling, continuing education, pay scales, nurse/patient ratio...etc. I was wondering..why do nurses even bother with work? Why don't they switch professions into something less demanding and as good of pay? What makes you get up in the morning (or evening or night!) to go to work?

Thanks...for the acknowledgement..I am exploring other options..I'm transferring out of oncology (peds) to Peds Icu and I eventually want to make a transfer to forensic nursing..I'm taking the course to be a SANE nurse..so I'm aware I need a change and I'm making it....I hope you will enjoy nursing as I truly have it is in my opinion a noble profession as someone said previously......I just wish people were more aware of how much of ourselves we give day in and day out...I don't want a medal or anything just a little more respect would be nice...anyway good luck and when those mean senior nurses give you crap or make u feel stupid and the will..just realize thats its probably not you they're mad at just the job getting to them...

There's nothing wrong with liking/needing the money that nursing brings. I realize, looking back on my posts, that I sound totally altruistic and fluffy. While I AM fluffy (hehehe, not fat), I also look forward to a really nice paycheck in the future. I talk about what I'll do with the money and how we'll take nice trips, put in our patio, buy a big washer and dryer, la lala. So yeah, it's just nice that the thing I'm on fire about doing is ALSO one of the jobs that's in the highest demand right now. Nothing wrong with that at all! I've spent a lot of time in my life pursuing stuff that didn't work out at all, so this is a nice change, really.

re: whats to enjoy about nursing?

maybe i wear rose-colored glasses, but i love nursing. i love being able to say i am a registered nurse because i earned that right. i love getting a new admission and working with them all day. i love the responsibility that i carry, and the professionalism that i am responsible to show. i love that i get to wear scrubs and that i don't have to wear dresses, skirts, stockings and heels anymore. i love my patients and feeling at the end of the day that maybe, just maybe, i've made a difference for someone. i love when sometimes i am in the middle of hanging an iv or drawing up meds or some other technical thing, i will stop for a minute and still marvel "wow, i am really doing this. i am really qualified for this". i feel like i am truly living my dream and answering my call to healing. sure it gets tiring and sure, sometimes there are assignments that make me nervous, scared, or otherwise upset. but its all a state of mind. i am positive in my career choice, positive in my outlook, and i totally love what i do. this is the first job that i don't get an upset, nervous stomach before work. i love this whole experience. i have no problem getting up to go to work in the morning.

hi! i very much agree with everything that you said. although i would have to say that even if i am not yet a nurse, i'm looking forward to becoming one. i think that being a nurse is a vocation, aside from being a profession. not everybody has this calling to serve the sick and the old.

it's not so much the paycheck that is the no. 1 consideration but to be able to make a difference in someone else's life, even if only for a moment, is something that i would like to achieve. i hope i could be a good nurse someday.

love everything that you said!!!

You post really disgusted me. Please try to find a job where you work with paperwork. You seem burned out.

"Negativity drags everyone down, and it seems like there are plenty of people who don't need a lot of encouragement to feed off it when a busybody complainer comes in the bunch. Pretty soon, though, nothing is right, everything is wrong and it's like a toilet bowl with everyone swirling and going down the drain together." This is a quote by you.

Please realize that you are being negative about a profession that creates so much joy for me. Sure there are plenty of things to get angry and frustrated about, but in the end it is about the pts. We would not have a job without the pts. Laughter heals a lot more than tears.

I can relate to your background of "gripers". I have found that my thoughts are so much more powerful than I give them credit for. Turn some of those negative comments into positives because it is what you chose to focus on.

Jmeador,

Please don't berate anybody for all the complaining that goes on at allnurses.com. It could be the only place where somebody is able to complain! After all, God bless anybody who has taken on this difficult and important job. For me, I love to be able to throw some topic out on a new thread and get a bunch of replies. As for the complaining, better people do it here than dumping it on their fellow workers.

well ive been an lvn nurse for 7 years, ill say my feelings of joy come and go- when i worked in postpartum as an cna, i liked the work, patients condition was not too serious- but now i work as a nurse on an med/surg/psych/trach/burn unit/cancer ward/ homeless unit- the work is very hard , i work the 12 hour shifts, and my back cramps up, some units are just harder and more challenging, will a certain kind of patient attitude- that alone can weigh on you, if not positive, but if you feel like your born for this - just keep going.gods looking down on you

That's perfectly understandable and it is a good question. It does seem that some people are so miserable you just want them to move on.

It is indeed best to go into this with eyes wide open and no rose colored glasses because it's a tough life.

Exactly! i dont think its a bed of roses.its all about sacrificing ur time for another being.I aspired to be a nurse but i think everything i tried didnt work. I actually wanted to schol abroad but the chances are slim. i think allnurses can help me out. Am nigerian 18years of age. Am so in love with it. Its my Dream!!!!

thanks for listening

The caring session specially to geriatrics. I enjoy caring patient and make a discussion with them regarding their health, health teaching. I like giving advices. It's just simple yet, its a fulfillment for what I dreamed of.. :roll
