What's the longest time that passed before hearing back that you got the job?

I interviewed a week and a half for my dream job. It went REALLY well, the nurse manager even said at the end of it they'd be in touch next week to see what they had to offer. My hopes were sky high. Last week passed and I hadn't heard anything so I called HR on Friday and the manager told me the nurse manager and DON hadn't sat down to meet about candidates yet, but that she would call me as soon as she heard anything. I looked on the website and the position I applied for had been taken down and I saw a posting on a job forum for a traveler position in that department (for a different amount of hours and shift than I had applied for). My hopes are borderline crushed at this point, but I'm trying to stay optimistic. I know there could still be a chance. I'm guessing if it fell through that the nurse manager couldn't get it authorized for me (I'd be coming in with no experience in that particular field). They hadn't checked any references yet so I know it has nothing to do with that, and I'm in good standing in every job I've worked.

What's the longest time you heard back after an interview? Is this a normal amount of time? Should I count this out and start looking elsewhere again?

Almost a month. And of course I waited and waited since I really wanted the job, but was then offered another less desireable job and took it thinking I was never going to hear back. I tried calling too. One week into orientation at crappy job dream job called with an offer. I declined thinking it was rude to leave a new job right away. Looking back, I should have quit and taken the other job.

Interviewed in November for job and was asked how soon I could start, to which I gave a date in December. Was told they'd call back the next week with a date for orientation. Never heard back so I called HR. HR told me "We're still waiting on funding approval for that position." Basically, I was being interviewed for a job that hadn't actually been approved. They finally called me in January to make the job offer and acted like it was no big deal that they'd taken so long. I went to 2 days of orientation and decided that it was not a place where I truly wanted to be for many red flag reasons.

It took my current job almost a month to call me back. I was just about to accept another job offer when they called me. Glad I procrastinated.

You just never know until you get the offer and it's firm... some people will say, not until you are given your first patient load.

There are a few people who have posted that they got an offer, accepted, signed and approved, packed, put down rent and security deposit in another state only to find out the offer was recinded a week or so before their first day of work.

Working in management (I work as an administrator in our nursing department) we often interview candidates and then have to work through the red tape, schedules, and sadly other people who don't really have an urgency to move the hire process along. The person(s) who interviewed you may be one of MANY people who all have to "sign off" on the hiring process before they can call you with your official offer. Working in management have given me a lot of insight into certain things that looks unreasonable from the outside, but it's really just a matter of guidelines that must be followed before we can get what we want.

Hope you get the job OP!

I would definitely wait and not throw it out as a possibility. The person who may need to do follow up with references, board checks, etc. may simply be on vacation. My work sits on my desk until I get back when I'm out lol. Unless it is an EXTREMELY urgent matter.

I went on an interview 2 weeks ago it went really well, he practically offered me the job in the interview. He had me do the drug screen and told me it took 5 days to get the results and I should hear back the next week. When I didn't hear back I called his receptionist and she said he was doing interviews all week. So I waited a week and called back today. His receptionist told me he was still doing interviews, and that he is interviewing until Aug 1st! She said, do you have another offer from another job or something that you need to know right away?? I said no, I'm sorry, he told me I would hear back the week after the interview, I didn't mean to bother you. She said oh ok, let me find out and I will get back with you. What is that all about? If he would have told me Aug 1st in my interview I wouldn't even start calling to follow up yet! Now I feel like I've blown it by bugging the receptionist!

I went through this EXACT SAME THING a few weeks ago. THE SAME STORY! I interviewed on a Monday, they said they were finishing up interviews that week (actually heard them make a reference to the fact they had one scheduled for Friday), so I waiting till the next Monday... and Tuesday... and Wednesday.... nothing.... nothing.... I did follow up with the Nurse Recruiter that Thursday, and she said they still hadn't picked anybody yet... but I pretty much thought I didn't get it. Till the NEXT Tuesday (two weeks after I interviewed), they called and offered the job.

Dont get discouraged!!! Maybe the same will happen for you!!! It was my dream job, too!!! :)

The only thing I have to add: this economic climate makes us all into neurotic weirdos, including me. My best to ALL of you looking for that first nursing job. :redbeathe
