what would you do different?...

what would you do different if you were able to change some of the things you did when you were younger, to better the career you have now, knowing what you know now. what would you have done?:p:)

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

I would have BELIEVED IN MYSELF, my capabilities, my intelligence and my strength to do whatever my HEART told me to do LONG before I came to realize this...not letting "naysayers" tell me I could not do it.

I would NOT take my eyes off the prize, the goal, the brass ring.

And I would live like there was really no tomorrow, but enjoying today. I would spend more time with friends, worrying less about what negative people think or say.

I would trust my instincts, cause often that "gut" feeling is so right yet defies logic.

I would laugh more, whine less. Smile more, frown less. I would read more, listen more, talk less.

Funny as we get older, we all begin to see these things. Some of us sooner than others. I was a late-bloomer myself. But I digress......

As much as I love Nursing, I would have probably opted for a job that had health insurance and better bene's for retiree's. Amazing how your priorities start to change when 40 start creeping up on you. I probably would have gotten into school nursing at a young age so I could retire with a full pension after 25 years. Not an option for a lowly staff nurse where I work.

Specializes in Med/Surg, ER, L&D, ICU, OR, Educator.

I would have laughed at myself more...

I would have worked a little less...

I would have talked less....you learn more listening...

I would have wasted less time commuting...

....maybe I should drink more.....a nice Shiraz, so I can relax more!

Specializes in Community Health Nurse.

first let me commend you on beginning a great topic of discussion here, rnbrat! quite wise for one so young...btw...welcome to allnurses! :kiss

in addition to what everyone else has already mentioned before me, i would add that i would have requested different parents before coming to earth because the ones i had did not in any way encourage me to further anything positive in my life. i find it absolutely amazing that i had the common sense to pursue an education in the first place. having said that, i would have gone on to medical school in spite of my father having forbidden me to do so. i am sooooo much wiser today than yesteryear, and knowing what i know today, i might have chosen to beg god not to send me to earth at all......but........being that i'm here...:chair:...i will suffice it to say that i am at peace with myself for being of sane mind...well...at times anyway :chuckle...which enables me to give of myself so unselfishly to others. if i can help somebody during the course of my life, all the yesteryears that were full of pain for me will have been worth my being born.

Become a pharmacist and be getting ready to retire off the big bucks they were paying in the 70s and 80s (relative to the cost of living then.)

I would have overcome my fear of calculus. I knew when I could figure out dosages and drug formulas in order to graduate nursing school, I had it in me to pass other math classes. My own fear held me back from being a Equine Veterinarian.

Then again, I also wanted to be the female Howard Stern, but didn't think I could make much of a living doing that! :chuckle

There were a couple of places I worked that were pretty "toxic," and working there made me miserable. I would leave them much more quickly than I did!
