Hi There Everyone,

I am a young nurse from Boston, MA. I have my BSN-RN and have been working in an outpatient primary care setting (Adult/Peds/Some UC). We do meds, nebs, immunizations, wound care, INR reporting, med recs/refills, pt teaching etc. We get our occasional CP patient in UC who we give Oxygen, ASA, call 911 and send them off. I really do like the office job, nice hours, focusing on one patient at a time, and the adminstration side of work. However, the pay is not what other nurses are making in the area and I am interesting in trying to save some extra money and buy a home. I know with this economy it is great that I even have a job. My question is.. what to do next! I have not done any med-surg and would much rather not. I never really like much of the floor when I was in nursing school. I was wondering what my chances would be of maybe getting into a private clinic (cardio/onc, endo/gi), L&D, maybe dialysis? I would really love feedback. Also, can anyone suggest a type of floor that may not be the nightmare that you typically hear when you think "med-surg". For all you med-surg nurses out there, I give you more credit than anyone! I know that I could not do it for years! Any help or advice would be great! Thank you!

What about urgent care in a hospital? Sounds like you have experience with a mixed crowd and could do with slightly less acute then ED.

These days there is not a med-surg floor in the hospitals that don't involve hard work...mentally, and physically. Not everyone wants to work in a hospital, and that's ok too. Try applying at the private clinics near you...what's the worst that can happen? At best, you could get a new, challenging job that you can really enjoy too! Good luck

I would say get a solid year of experience where you are and then start putting your resume out there. In the mean time, doesn't hurt to network. I would go to conventions, job fairs, happy hour nearby where you think you may want to work;). You never know who you will meet and what opportunities might come your way.

Hello!

I work in Boston and have recently graduated...it was tough to find a Job, and was only considered because I precepted there. I agree with the above poster and think you should work and gain experience for a year before moving elsewhere. (mot to mention the job market might be better...)

As far as med-surg goes, I work on a surgical vascular floor and although I love it, it can get crazy.

Good luck with your endeavors!

kmd199 - Your job sounds like the job I want! LOL! I just wrote a post similar to yours entitled "where do I go from here." I'm in home health, like it but the paperwork is getting to me. I find myself in front of a computer more than in front of patients! I'm not as concerned about the $$ as I am about the type of job.
