doctors firing nurses??? :(

what the heck was on er tonight? carter gets to decide how much money to spend on security measures, and then is going to fire three senior nurses to pay for it??? when did docs have anything to do with the unit budget, and when did they start firing nurses?? tell me this is not normal practice at any hospital...please.

i have had it. i know they have a medical advisor- does this guy have delusions of grandeur? does he need a psych consult, or one of those metal charts upside the head? someone on this board suggested an episode from the nursing perspective- let the docs take the background for an hour. i love that idea.

let's start a revolution...i'm off to find a feedback link, and i expect all of you professionals out there to send in letters.

back in a minute.

Having a nurse catch a potentially fatal error wouldn't kill them.

Nor would nursing and docs collaborating on unit decisions.

It is a fictional show, but real life patients get their only impressions of hospitals, and nurse/doc relationships from it. Hasn't anyone ever said to you "the doctor said I could" or "we'll see what the doctor says" when dealing with a simple hospital policy like no smoking?

This supposed to be a behind the scenes look at an ER- we could all benefit from strong capable nurses in the media- on a prime time TV show.

Why does it kill you that they don't show this?

Ah, but you all missed, or forgot, that Carter is part of the administration! A few episodes ago (before last season's end) Carrie gave him that job. He's next in command of the ER, so it would be appropriate for him to fire/hire the nurses.

OBNurse, I loved your subtle dig about the show. I wonder if they'll catch it! Escape from reality! LOL

Sure thing! I just don't see what it has to do with "ER." I think it has to do with crappy docs that, in their God-complex, like to overrule nurses, and crappy nursing/hospital administration that lets them get away with it.

I just think that if you're gonna tackle this, you should start with the source. I think that will be more likely to influence the way the entertainment industry portrays us. I don't think hospital management is watching and taking their clues from "ER."

It wasn't a dig. But thanks anyways.

Because we are not getting credit in the public eye for all the work we do.

Well, perhaps if public adoration and recognition is what you wanted, another career would have been a better choice. I still maintain that I get "credit" for what I do from my patients.

Time for a stiff drink. I'll buy a round for everyone.

I think media and reality both need work and this was our chance to get together and work on the media. But if no one thinks its a good idea I will survive.

Cheers.

I think the whole about Carter having the right to fire the senior nurses is purely for storyline purposes ONLY.... He is dating Abby, Abby I am pretty sure is a Senior Nurse.... You get where this COULD be going...

Its a TV show... If you want to watch the REAL hospitals play what about watching Trauma Life in the ER....

OK ......We could rant and write...we are nurses, in T.V. land ratings rule. Controversy and sensationalism sell. Looks like the producers are accomplishing what they intend. I agree with Heather I enjoy the entertainment..altho on the other hand , as a nurse I was hoping nurse Abby would pop that creep with 100 of succ's with out the I.V (who cares) see how fast he'd drop:eek:.......maybe next episode Dr. Romano will go on a guys night out get drunk, get on stage and immitate EmnEm (since every body cant stand 'em any way) he can lip-sinc. that emnem song that keeps saying "i'm back".. not :D

I emailed them. Told them what a loyal fan I am, and how much I look forward to escaping reality for one hour every week, and that even though I'm a nurse, I enjoy the show for it's entertainment value.

Maybe it's just my warped sense of humor, Heather! :)

What I hear you saying here is that you're a nurse, and therefore in some position to critique the show on its medical merits. Finding none, you enjoy it for entertainment value and "escaping reality" meaning that there isn't much "real" medically in the show.

Canoehead....don't be discouraged....l think a lot will respond to the website without responding on this thread....l did fire off an e-mail...perhaps you should dedicate a seperate thread to the website feed-back only.....cause l wasn't sure what this thread topic was about till l click on it...honestly,l think this bothers a lot more nurses than you think...they just don't all respond to threads....thanks...LR
