What is the proper way to resign?

Hi everyone!

I am a new RN, graduated in May of 07. I am working now in a rehab unit for a LTC/assisted living facility. I like my job, but I am moving to Florida (I live in TN now) at the beginning of September. What is the best way to quit? I was planning on writing a letter of resignation, but should I tell the DON in person too? Is email an acceptable way to send the letter, or should I put it in her mailbox at work? As my first nursing job, I really want to be able to list this on my resume. Any advice? Also, it is a pretty small facility, with about 20 nurses. We just had a nurse come back from maternity leave, so we've actually been overstaffed here lately. I don't think I'll cause a big shortage when I go. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

i think it's preferable to give your notice in person.

you can give your DON the written resignation when you speak with her.

email would not be acceptable at all.

minimum of 2 wks notice.

you're right.

it's very important not to burn any bridges.

leave on the best terms possible.

best of everything. :balloons:

Since you know you're leaving in September, it would be nice to let your DON know now, so they have time to find and orient a replacement for you. In your letter make sure you say something like "I have enjoyed my time here and am grateful for the opportunity to start my nursing career at this facility."

Give 2-4 weeks' notice(4 is preferrable and seems more appreciated in my experience) in writing(submit it in person if possible and take a few minutes to discuss the letter) and keep a copy for yourself. Don't email it.

Check your hospital's policy for the amt of time you must give to resign. State in your resignation that you've enjoyed working there but because of you are moving to another State ( for whatever reason) you must resign.Don't put in anything negative about the place . That could lead to a bad reference in the future.
