What is the deal w/ this stupid hospital?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Two weeks ago, I got a full color, glossy nurse recruiting flyer and letter in the mail from a hospital in a nearby town.

The flyer had a photo of a woman doing a back-bend and said "We're bending over backwards to hire YOU.

$10,000, sign-on bonus for RNs! Great new nurse to pt ratios!"

They even included a fake check for $10,000. made out to "Florence Nightingale, RN".

I called (the day I got the letter)and left a message saying that I got their mailer, and I wanted to know more about the new staffing ratios.

I didn't get a return call in a week's time, so I called them again.

They called back and left a message on my machine saying "Sorry, but we're currently in a nursing hiring freeze. If you'd like to fill out an application, it will remain in our files for 6 months, and if...blah blah blah"

Why the hell did they send out those recruitment letters?

No matter if they're hring or not, I know I don't want to work for any hospital that is that confused!:(

I know what you mean. I get all kinds of these stupid things in the mail too. When I was looking for a job last year, I answered dozens of these local ads too, and when I contacted the facility I rarely got responses back from them.

Aggravating isn't it? I think it's part of the game they play...pretend there's not enough nurses so they have an excuse to understaff. What they are REALLY searching for is a few good 'PERFECT NURSES'...cheap, young, totally healthy, compliant in all ways and risk free.....also part of the game. ;)

Wow! We'll take ya! :)

I think you're right, mattsmom81.

Also, if they show the fed gov't how "hard" they are trying to recruit local nurses but just "can't find any", maybe they can get permission to sponser a load of foreign, read: (cheaper, more compliant, and under years long contracts) nurses.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of! Is that a pretty common practice? Do you think it is a regional thing or what?

Not to mention the cost of printing these flyers, checks, letters, etc!!!!!

It's a management game. Docs and nurses don't hire. Suits do. I agree with HellllloNurse. It's a ploy to show that the hospital is doing its part in the nursing shortage even though they have no intention of hiring right now. Many hospitals are strapped financially. The openinings are there, they just can't afford to fill them.

And the bonus check? The hoops you have to go through just to get it. The hospital cannot afford to spend this kind of money for every new hire!

School systems do the same thing. Send the school board members to out of state locations to hire teachers rather than hire local people. That way the school board members get a free vacation. They try to say there is a shortage of teachers so they can do this. The taxpayers pay for these free trips.

A similar thing happened to me. An agency where I had worked contacted me by mail, personally, asking if I were looking for a job and would I be interested in coming back to work for them, since I had a great work record with them in the past. They said if I was interested to please email them. I did - and again and again. It's been over a year now, and they still have not responded. But that's okay. I love my current job and probably will stay until they kick me out! ;)

You're not kidding! We have a hospital here that just opened a new birth center, and is supposedly hiring left and right to staff it, along with re-staff their original units in certain areas because of people leaving/retiring/etc. They are running HUGE ads in the paper, saying things like, "We'll meet or beat your current salary!" and advertising big bonuses, great new pay scales, new scheduling options, blabbityblahblahblah. Every single week they're running these ads, so I finally send my resume and application in, and contact the nurse recruiter through email (which is specified in the ads- email preferred for quicker responses). I've sent three emails in the last three weeks, and ZIPPO. I finally called them and they said, oh, yes, we're not hiring in that department. I said, wait, I've got TODAY'S ad in my hands, and it is JUST FOR THE BIRTH CENTER, advertising jobs in this area. The recruiter just stammered and repeated that there were no openings in the area. Umm, okay...then why are you running this ad? Nothing? Not even ONE opening? A whole, half-page ad, and nothing? I said, are you going to be hiring soon, then? Thinking the ad was run early. Nope. Only hiring adult ICU and Telemetry. Well, gee.

Ooh! I forgot one!

There was a nursing agency that was making a big deal of advertising themselves, that they were looking for Maternal/Child nurses desperately. I emailed the recruiter and this is the reply I got:

Come in and apply.

Well, way to recruit! Good job! No thanks for inquiring, no hey can't wait to meet ya', no yes we have jobs for people with teeth, nothing. Who wants to work for THAT? If you can't even respond to an inquiry with a SMIDGE of interest, you shouldn't call yourself a 'recruiter', IMO.

Is there something we can do to report these kind of practices? I wonder if the Department of Labor would regulate this so that these hospitals could not "false advertise" their ghost positions. How is a person supposed to get a job with stuff like this going on?

Any ideas/comments anyone?
