What is the deal?!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been searching nearly every day since April for a "non floor" nursing job and cant find anything in my area (Kansas)! I have looked at all job search websites, the paper, anything and everything I can find with jobs on it but am having no luck. I would like to get into risk management, or quality assurance, stuff like that, away from pt. care. I really enjoy the "office" type setting 8-5. I would consider doing a Dr. office, but like i said I would like to get away from pt. care. Does anyone do anything like this or know of any resources I can try? Thank you in advance!

In general, there are not nearly as many of those jobs as there are bedside nursing jobs, and they are often filled from within or with "someone who knows someone" before they ever get to the point of being advertised to the public.

Also, most of the type positions you're describing require significant clinical experience in order for you to be considered eligible/qualified -- you didn't mention anything in your post about how long you've been in nursing. If it happens that you are a new (or newer) graduate, you will probably have a hard time getting something away from the bedside.

Have you tried your state government employment website (state employee jobs, I mean)? There are typically many, many healthcare/nursing related jobs within state government that most people are never even aware exist, and they are often M-F, regular hours, office-type jobs.

Probably your best bet is to just keep searching, in an organized, consistent way, and network, network, network! Best wishes --

That's pretty typical of the white-collar world. That's why 'they' preach the critical importance of networking.

are you a new nurse??? if you have experience, it will probably be easier to find this type of job. I know around here as a new RN there is a very slim chance you would find a job like that right off the bat. good luck.

Try insurance companies. They are always looking for nurses to go over medical records and such. Just a thought.

If you have any universities nearby another avenue is to look for research nursing positions. This can involve screening patients for studies, looking for complications from the study medication, all kinds of things. It doesn't pay as well as hospital nursing but you get the nice schedule and low-chaos work. Just a tip, if the university is affiliated with a hospital sometimes the university positions are listed in a separate area from the hospital positions.

Good luck!
