What inspired you to become a nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

I'm heading off to college soon and I still can't decide on a career. I am very curious about becoming a nurse and was wondering anyone could give me advice or tell me their story of why they became a nurse. I'm not sure what type of nursing I am interested in yet ..

Specializes in Obstetrics, OR, OB PACU,.

I have never responded to a post until now. So many negatives are circulated about how difficult, stressful, and horrible nursing is. Yes, it is a career filled with stress and difficulties. However, I feel that this is truly who I am. I am the nurse who will NEVER regret my career choice. I work in OB, and I have the BEST job in the world. I go to work excited to make a difference in someone's life. I have the power to make a hospital stay the best experience possible, or I can make it scary, frightening, and negative. I will walk into your room, introduce myself, and talk with you and your family. I will sit down and ask you what your wishes, hopes, and fears are. I will take time to go through your birth plan with you (if you have one), and explain which expectations we can or cannot meet. I will answer all your questions. I may not have all the answers, but I will find the answer for you. I will be truthful, honest, and compassionate. I will treat you with respect and dignity, and ask that you and your family to do the same for me. If, for some reason, there is difficulty with the birthing process, I will attempt to explain the situation to you and your family. If this is a loss of pregnancy, I will be there with you and your family. I will treat your loved one with care and gentleness. Why did I become a nurse? Because I can think of no other more rewarding career. Because although my co-workers tease me about being "too nice", this is who really am. I go home exhausted, achy, and mentally and physically wore out, knowing I made a difference. Because I choose to have a positive attitude, and not complain about how "awful nursing is, how much I hate my job and why did I ever become a nurse?". I am proud to be a nurse!

Thank you for sharing your stories or your words of wisdom. I truly appreciate you guys taking the time to answer my question. I feel very inspired
